Seriously, though, why do they keep making new versions of Peter Pan

Because it's awesome. Also, this is a prequel.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's a classic childrens' story that can be marketed to the whole family. You might as well ask why Disney keeps making adaptations of fairy tales.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
They do it because: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoYWdHe4tQ4

I've been waiting to use this clip forever.

This is the first time I've actually seen a picture of the actress everyone was mad about. LMAO I was expecting her to at least be brunette or something. I can't take that seriously either (along with the trendy shortened one-word title).

Honestly, Peter Pan is one of those things where you're going to be offensive, no matter how hard you try. The Disney version was super racist, even if it was 'just fun' at the time. The original book wasn't any better. It's not just the casting; Tiger Lily wouldn't be any less racist a character if she were played by and actual Native American.

I'm not even sure how to respond to this. On one hand, the character has been kind of a terrible stereotype (well, the Native American portrayal in general, if not specifically Tiger Lily) in all the story's incarnations. So maybe, best case scenario, having a white actor could erase the offensiveness inherent in the role? But that's a stretch, of course. There are practically zero roles ever for Native Americans, let alone pretty lead characters who are Native, and this one role where they could've changed stuff to make it be done right was tossed under the bus.

For what it's worth, if this is based on the musical (I don't remember) Tiger Lily is always a white blonde girl, just as Peter Pan is never actually played by a guy. None of it makes sense. No obligation to follow that offensive precedent though. Did they ever make an official statement on why they didn't cast a Native American?

Apparently I'm the only one here who doesn't know Peter Pan enough to have even heard there was a Native American character called Tiger Lily.

My two cents:

I never thought of Tiger lilly as an actual native-American. I mean, sure, no reason why she couldn't ALSO be a real native amrerican, but I always got the "Kid's playing cowboys and Indians" vibe from her. They're not native americans because they're not American. They have adopted the idea of what "Indians" are and ran with it. Like how Hook and his lot do no actual piracy, they just hang around and do piraty things, you know?

So Tiger Lilly is just a girl playing at "Indians" the way kids do.

I sort of feel similarly..

Like, I don't really get offended at by racebending usually (except The Last Airbender, that was just tragic), but my mind just keeps going "WTF am I seeing, that's not the character, it CAN'T be".

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I vaguely recall the trailer I saw for this months ago, and it seemed to take itself way too seriously. Like Peter was some kind of revolutionary orphan in London? And all the white people who "aren't actually Native Americans"? I can't remember it all and don't feel like looking it up. I hope OP is right that it's going to turn out to be a big joke, because I get the impression they're aiming for a summer epic.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can't get offended by white casting for Tiger Lily because I can't believe her character was ever created with her true ethnicity in mind anyway. I think she was always supposed to be 2 dimensional. So I don't think proper casting could have saved her anyway.

The more I think about it the more I think the way they cast here was more sound than casting a Native American. Neverland isn't North America. Tiger Lily and her tribe are not part of any real nation but are ugly racist stereotypes of Native Americans. This isn't a case of a non-Native American playing a specific person from a specific nation. Like an English actress playing Pocahontas. This is a case of an actress playing a fantasy character on a fantasy island that was drawn to be a racist caricature.

I'd rather they go with a more novel approach like they did in the movie with a multi-ethnic tribe, yes, the tribe is made of not just white people but of actors of multiple ethnic backgrounds than with having to make up a tribe out of whole cloth and go with outdated stereotypes.

Tiger Lily is NOT First Nation. She is part of a little boy's made up world who wouldn't have had any exposure to First Nation people. She is what he would have imagined an Indian Princess to be but there is no real relation to real First Nation people. There is a freaking crocodile with a clock in it's belly and a fairy flying around. So for fucks sake quit taking things out of context to make them something they are not.

Unless this is a crossover thing where Tiger Lily actually is 'Stands With A Fist', this is hilarious and sad

Who is peter pan, Morgan Freeman?
