Sometimes you hear a line in a song and something about it touches you. What are your favorite lyrics, and what song do the come from?

"Carry on my wayward son, they'll be peace when you're done"

Cliched, I know, but that song has actually gotten me through some hard times. Thinking ahead and realizing the bad isn't going to last forever has been helpful for me.

Once I knew myself
And with knowing came love
I would know love again if I had faith enough
Too far is next spring and her jubilant shout
Sweet angels, inside
Is the only way out

-Vienna Teng, Drought

She has so many good lyrics though. Listen to Watershed or Gravity some time, just gorgeous.

Amen by Jewel:
"A forest fire
Nibbles at your veins
Crawls up your arm
runs away with your mind
And burns dry thoughts like leaves."

Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics:
"Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused."

I will have more by other bands and singers, but right now, these are the two that come to mind:

"There's bombs in the buses, bikes, roads, inside your market, your shops, your clothes. My dad, he's got a lot of fear I know, but enough pride inside not o let that show." -- Hands Held High, Linkin Park

"If I'm killed by the question like a cancer, then I'll be buried in the silence of the answer." -- By Myself, Linkin Park

"Mr. Sandman showing his beam
When he walks into the room the walls lean in to listen
Surfed out brain waves flick back and forth
Like old headlights sniffing model glue again
Head like a steel trap
Wish I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't
I don't just want to be a footnote in someone else's happiness"

The translation of O Fortuna always cuts deep for me:

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
and waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate – monstrousand empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.

Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me.

I don't know if this will make sense to anyone else but I love this part of fun.'s Carry On:

"My head is on fire but my legs are fine
After all, they are mine"

My legs really are not fine, and they're even worse than they would be because I spent a long time pushing myself too hard. So I interpret this, in the context of the song, as saying it's fine to go at your own pace as long as you keep going. That would have been a much better message for me than the "keep pushing as hard as you can and never ever give up!" that I feel like I see everywhere.

"And you thought the lions were bad
Well they tried to kill my brothers
And for every king that died
Oh they would crown another
And it's harder than you think
Telling dreams from one another
And you thought the lions were bad
Well they tried to kill my brothers" - Bastille, Daniel in the Den

These are all from Laura Marling. Also, I think they work better in the context of the song & can come across a little cheesy outside that context. I don't know whether they're brilliant but I love them.

"Those of us who are lost and low, I know how you feel. I know it's not right but it's real." (Don't Ask Me Why)

"And I'm clearing all the crap out of my room, trying desperately to figure out what it is that makes me blue, and I wrote an epic letter to you, and it's 22 pages front and back and it's just too good to be used. And I tried to be a girl that liked to be used, but I'm too good for that, there's a mind under this hat, so I called them all and told them I've got to move." (Goodbye England (Covered in Snow))

"Today I will feel something other than regret. Pass me a glass and a half-smoked cigarette. I've damn near got no dignity left. I've damn near got no dignity left." (Once I Was an Eagle)

Living without you
Living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you
Wanting you near
How much I wanted you home

But now that you've come back
Turned night into day
I need you to stay

~Open Arms, Journey

and

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

This verse isn't heard nearly often enough.

There are so many, but one that stands out is this one from Born To Die:

Sometimes love is not enough
and the road gets tough
I don't know why

It's so simple and not very poetic at all, but it's so naive and honest. I feel like so many songs are about how someone feels and the truth behind that vulnerability. This one is very clear on having no answers, and there isn't even a question about it. It leaves so much room for growth.

I don't know, it sticks.

"You were a child who was made of glass
You carried a black heart passed down from your dad
If somebody loved you they'd tell you by now
We all turn away when you're down
You want to go back to where you felt safe
To hear your brother's laughter, see your mother's face
Your childhood home is just powder-white bones
And you'll never find your way back"
— The Hush Sound; That's Okay

"Time will rob you blind, take everything you have to offer
Love, sweet when it comes saves all us beggars, priests, and authors
Oh, how do we let go? When someone we love slips away in the shadows
It's hard to see you go 'cause you mean everything to me
The seeds that you have sewn will live on deep inside of me
It's time, you're leaving now
Your hands are cold, as I kiss your brow
And I will try, but I don't know how to let go"
— Tyrone Wells; Let Go

Because we don't need love to know it's good to be alive.

"You are what you love / not who loves you" - from Fall Out Boy's "Save Rock and Roll".

I've spent the past year slowly realizing that my mother is a truly terrible person, and that she doesn't actually see me when she looks at me; she sees the version of me she concocted in her head before I was born (straight, cis female, college-educated, perfect mental health, cheerful and energetic). I'm slowly working towards getting out permanently, but managing her shittiness while not letting slip that I'll be cutting contact before I'm financially stable is exhausting. It's a good reminder that while she may love me (or what she wants me to be), I'm not worth any less because I'm not that person, and her feelings reflect only on her, not on me.

Under Pressure - Queen feat. David Bowie

Why can't we give love that one more chance?
Why can't we give love give love give love give love give love...

'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
and love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the nightand
and love dares you to change our way of
caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
under pressure
