It's about time

[personal profile] slashgirl 2015-03-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended by the BBC (http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-31824040) for a "fracas" with one of the beeb's producers. Apparently he threw a punch and missed. After all the other racist bullshit he's pulled, it's almost hitting a producer that gets him suspended? But it has happened and i couldn't be happier--means the three remaining eps of TG for this season won't air until things have been settled...but maybe Clarkson will finally realise he's not untouchable? Then again, maybe he won't.

And his fans on tumblr have already made graphics (save Jezza) and started a fucking petition to get him reinstated. OMG people, he's been suspended not fucking fired. I fully support the BBC's decision. They should've done it sooner.

The fact that there are still people defending him at this point just makes me lose a bit of faith in humanity.

You understand the BBC bending over backwards to accommodate him because the TG franchise brings in a shitload of money for them (one estimate was about £100 million a year, between the merch and syndication), but if his fans still don't think his behavior is a problem and he should be allowed to keep doing it with no consequences than I have no idea what to say to that.

At this point I think they'd pretty much blindly defend from any charge, up to and including murder. Even if there was video showing him doing it. (I also don't get the people who think he's sexy, although I'm partial to James May, so I guess....).

I'm 99% sure the BBC won't fire him, he makes them too much money.

They should hire Sabine Schmitz to replace him. She is tall and mouthy too, and the change up between her and Hamster&Slow would really freshen the show. Or get Rowan Atkinson or Chris Evans to do it. Both of them are mad about cars, and entertaining in their own right.

And she's much easier to look at than Clarkson. *heh*

Could you explain for those of us who don't know who he is?

Re: It's about time

Comedian, pundit, presenter of a driving and automobile show on TV, well-known for controversy, racist jokes, opposition to political correctness, etc

Basically an annoying shithead

Also, subject of my favorite standup routine ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7CnMQ4L9Pc

I would never classify Clarkson, Hammond or May as comedians. BUt I do agree Jezza's an annoying shithead.

Re: It's about time

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't really call them comedians. They're presenters who have a more comic style (as opposed to perky, serious, etc.) who play exaggerated versions of themselves for a car show. Clarkson in particular plays up the cranky old man-bigot who's not afraid to make racist, sexist comments because he's taking some sort of stand against behaving like someone who's not a dick.

Note: I say all that as a person who watches the show, but not regularly. I just don't think his behavior or the *nudgenudgewinkwink* aren't I a naughty boy to be so un-PC schtick is particularly charming or funny.

He's a racist arsehole with pubes for hair.

Well, I liked Hammond's "On the Edge" book, so this standup is not for me. He said that he wished he's been killed. I mean it's humour and all, however... -_-

Re: It's about time

He says worse things (the bit about Clarkson specifically is, legitimately, my favorite joke in the English language, and also much more thoroughly awful).

That said, he does not mean any of those things. Rather, he is attempting to criticize what he views as the style and rhetoric of Top Gear by invoking that style against the presenters. That's not just my interpretation; the end of the bit is him explicitly saying those things. I don't know if that's necessarily a defense, but it is what he's doing.

The TV show he presents and represents is Top Gear.

Well I'm gutted but not surprised. Jezza's been toeing the line for years. Good for the Beeb In sticking to their guns but he will be missed.

Dude, he's suspended, not fired. He'll be back, unfortunately.

He'll still be missed.

Not by me. I'll miss seeing TG because he's a stupid asshat, but I will never miss him.

But hey, different strokes for different folks.

Bravo to this.

After all the other racist bullshit he's pulled, it's almost hitting a producer that gets him suspended?

Well, physical violence is a lot more serious than saying stupid shit.

Re: It's about time

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
The BBC are not going to fire him. The guy is a personal friend of the English Prime Minister for G-d's sake and the BBC are state controlled. If it even looks like he is in real trouble the BBC CEOs will get a phone call from Parliament telling them to back off and let Clarkson do what he wants.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-03-11 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I wonder what the producer did. I've no opinion on this, because I don't have enough info. Clarkson seems nice, though.

According to the Mirror tabloid, the production assistant (that is tv speak for intern) was late in bringing him a sandwich.

Mirror, though...
But thanks for the info! It's funny if true.

Not funny for the intern. He's basically finished in showbiz, no industry tolerates whistleblowers.

As I put it to a friend today:

"Clarkson got into one little fight and the Beeb got scared, so he's suspended and the show's going off air"

\\ Honestly, I love the show, I love all three presenters, and while if anyone else expressed the kind of shit Clarkson does (and even he has standards, as seen in that slam on Puegot drivers) I'd find them detestable, I enjoy Clarkson because he's a dinosaur and still manages to be such a charming one. I do think he was overdue for some punishment, and I'm a little annoyed at him for doing this NOW and not after the season was over.
