Twilicorn

Or; is it horrible and bad and wrong to have Twilight Sparkle become a princess?

Honestly, I think the anti-Twilicorn crowd doesn't go far enough. Like the pro-Twilicorn crowd says, Twilight becoming a princess was foreshadowed from episode 1. That's exactly the problem. If you want to write fic that goes against that, you need to deliberately take apart all the monarchist assumptions that are built into the fabric of the show, just like Pern fans (usually) oppose the author's homophobia, or Harry Potter fans fight back against Rowling's sharp divide between "good" and "bad" characters.

The baffling part was that "Twilight becomes an alicorn" was its own subgenre in fanfiction.

A very popular one at that.
