Fandom Fights

List your fandom. List the big "fights" in your fandom and where you stand.

SUPERNATURAL HAS A LOOOOOOONG HISTORY OF QUEERBAITING!!!!

No. No it doesn't. It has a couple instances of legit baiting and an acknowledgement of its fan base. And fans who see "deliberate" subtext in everything.

Re: Fandom Fights

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously think these people need to give up, I'm all for more queer representation but the people who think the show is going to make Dean bi and/or Cas gay need to take a step back and realize what they're watching.

Especially when they act like the showrunners MUST make Dean bi and it's a horribly offensive thing that they haven't done it yet. I just don't think it's offensive if Dean is straight, if the writers feel he is straight then leave it alone.

And this is coming from a bi woman.

And Teen Wolf.

Stiles being bi was baiting. Sterek is NOT.

Yes, what Jeff Davis said that one time was shitty (the 'we could be convinced' thing), but it's not queerbaiting. Queerbaiting must tie into the canon, too.

And in normal definitions, doesn't it mean there being actual scenes between the pairing that the fans think could be ambiguous, only for the writers to "NO HOMO" it? There is NOTHING like that about Stiles/Derek's interactions. They interacted a handful of times, and most of it was negative.

If "this ship got popular overnight based on nothing canonical" is queerbaiting now, then.. It's queerbaiting if they have scenes together, because WOW there are scenes but it's not canon romance! And if they don't, it's "ON PURPOSE TO SPITE THE SHIPPERS AND BAITING US"... okay.

That is my argument.

Digimon versus Pokémon

Basically. Although for me it's more like Pokemon has great games and an anime that when it's at its best is pretty good for its genre, Digimon has an anime that's solidly above average for its genre and "oh yeah, there are games too I guess"

I never remember this being a "fight" when I was in the Digimon fandom.

I only remember stupid Taito vs. (insert hetero portmanteau) pairing wars.

Doctor Who, which Doctor is the best?

They're all different and equally awesome, but my favorite is 11 and second favorite is 12.

Re: Fandom Fights

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I like almost all of them, but my top three is probably 7, 5, and 11, in that order. They're just so fascinating and... crunchy. I wouldn't necessarily say their runs on the show are necessarily my favorite (Five's run is mostly pretty bad unfortunately) but I love the actors and characters the most.

Gosh 7 is just the perfect Doctor. Gosh.

Also honorable mention to 8.

Twilicorn

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-03-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Or; is it horrible and bad and wrong to have Twilight Sparkle become a princess?

Honestly, I think the anti-Twilicorn crowd doesn't go far enough. Like the pro-Twilicorn crowd says, Twilight becoming a princess was foreshadowed from episode 1. That's exactly the problem. If you want to write fic that goes against that, you need to deliberately take apart all the monarchist assumptions that are built into the fabric of the show, just like Pern fans (usually) oppose the author's homophobia, or Harry Potter fans fight back against Rowling's sharp divide between "good" and "bad" characters.

Sailor Moon Crystal is great and let's list 5 million excuses for the bad art all still while trying to pretend the art is good.

Sailor Moon Crystal can be "okay" at best plot wise (and usually the plot is only okay when they stick to the manga and don't deviate) but the art is horrendous.

Tauriel

I wanted to like her. I don't think it was a bad idea to add a woman to the movie. But she is a completely unnecessary character and almost every decision surrounding her brought the movie down. I don't use this very much, but she is a Mary Sue. She caused the characterization of other characters to suffer to benefit her character.

And, beyond the deficiencies of her character, she just wasn't entertaining. Her lines were cringe-worthy, her storyline was boring and mishandled -- I've come to feel that there wasn't anything redeemable about her inclusion and quite a bit that was actually harmful.

Game of Thrones and trash ships

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Just because I saw it recently on Tumblr with Ramsay Bolton/Theon Greyjoy shippers.

Hate tends to come and go in waves for the past few years, usually disbelief there are shippers, but this time several BNFs got anon hate calling them rape apologists and that they should be raped and killed for shipping it.

This is definitely the most extreme response I've seen. I honestly don't care if people have trash ships, I have plenty involving villans, also many spatshippers are actually abuse and rape survivors who use it for catharsis. Why be against it but then send threats like this?

Not just Ramsay/Theon, but there's also Sansa/Petyr and stuff like that have had pretty scary responses. Scarier than the content itself.

Wonder Woman

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know now, because I'm not keeping close track, but when I was really into Wonder Woman fan discussion there was a big difference of opinion about her love life.

You have the fans who know her from the Justice League or SuperFriends, some of whom ship her with one of the men on the team. Diana/Bruce was sort of canon in at least one version, and there were Diana/Kal and Diana/SwimmerArthur ships.

(Of course, in fic, it could easily be Diana/Shayera or Diana/John, and yes I've seen the dirty fanart, no I don't have links to it now. But that doesn't count, those were AU.)

Then there were the fans who came in during a period where Diana/Steve were the official couple, and insisted on bringing that back.

And the fans who insisted Di was really supposed to be a lesbian.

And a few of us who wanted more potential love interests rather than just tying her down.

I don't know that these were fights exactly. Green Lanterns fans fought. We mostly just disagreed. A lot.

Dragon Age fandom seems to have about a dozen big fights, half of which I don't care about since I haven't played Inquisition yet. That said...

Anders was a selfish man who did a terrible thing, and his circumstances can't excuse that. My Hawke killed him, and if he'd been allowed to live, then my Warden would have hunted down and killed him later (and for the record, my Hawke and Warden were both mages who sided against templars).

I'm not a fan of bisexual mods, except in cases like Cullen's, where the only reason he's not romanceable by guys is because of development time constraints. Unlike most companies which slap a default straight label on everyone, Bioware makes an effort to show diversity. So if a character has limits on who they'll romance, chances are it's because the devs have thought carefully about why those limits suit them. Or ran out of time.

Supernatural

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Destiel and/or Cockles vs. Wincest and/or J2:

Oh my GOD it's all complete and utter horse shit. All three characters are canonically interested in women and/or have outright declared themselves straight, the dudes are all happily married to beautiful ladies with beautiful kids in RL, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. Get over it and over yourselves, and for fuck's sake quit hating on the RL wives and kids and the on-screen love interests.

Star Trek, need I say more?

WoW...I guess you could say the whole Thrall/Jaina vs. Thrall, excuse me, GOEL/Aggra thing. I'm firmly on the Thrall/Jaina side, even though that has been dashed into bits at this point and I only ship it now cause of Jaina as Thrall has worn out his welcome SO MUCH. FUCK YOU METZEN!!

Ahem.

Harry Potter had it's share, but that's pretty much died down in recent years...except the Wolfstar thing. Eugh.

Captain America does not technically have superhuman abilities. He operates at peak human capacity, meaning he's as strong as a human being can possibly be, as fast as a human can be, etc. But he does not have what you'd call super-strength, he can't run a one-minute mile, any of that.

This is important for the character, because he represents the best of us. He is what we as people could be, just as he's what America could be, if we cared as much, and if we tried as hard.

Fandom: Smallville

Fight: Lana Lang. That's all that really needs to be said lol

Where I stand: I love Lana. I love her so much, it's not even funny. She's so flawed.

Ignoring the bad writing and accepting that it simply is what it is, I really do view Lana as someone who's gone through some major character development. I feel that there are definitely different "eras" of Lana, and I've come to love every single one. Even when I hated what she became, I still appreciated her character. There was just something about her that I could always relate to in some form or another. I'm still not sure what it is.

I also feel that she had crazy chemistry with Clark. Kristin and Tom worked so well together, the writer's pretty much had to make it so their characters physically could not be around eachother in order for her to appropriately leave the picture to make room for Lois.

Lana means a lot to me. I was pretty shocked when I learned she was hated by pretty much every Smallville fan ever. Then again, the fans seemed to hate even the show, so...
