Tauriel

I wanted to like her. I don't think it was a bad idea to add a woman to the movie. But she is a completely unnecessary character and almost every decision surrounding her brought the movie down. I don't use this very much, but she is a Mary Sue. She caused the characterization of other characters to suffer to benefit her character.

And, beyond the deficiencies of her character, she just wasn't entertaining. Her lines were cringe-worthy, her storyline was boring and mishandled -- I've come to feel that there wasn't anything redeemable about her inclusion and quite a bit that was actually harmful.

And I personally ended up loving her, though I did have some problems with her. In particular I hated the "you have no love" scene. So cringeworthy. And plus, elves don't raise arms to each other like that, and especially not to their king. Not after the kinslayings and all the horror that resulted. Ultimately she did work for me, though.

I really wanted to like her. At the end of DoS, I still had hope for her character. There was still more good than bad in DoS. But seeing how it all turned out and thinking critically about her, I'm more than just disappointed.

Yeah I appreciate they they *tried* to include a woman but if that's how they were going to write her then I would have just taken the sausage fest.

The hobbit is already full of tons of characters anyway and putting in new ones makes for a very crowded movie.

I agree. What's sad is I've read all these other proposals fans have thought of for other awesome women they could've added (Bard's love interest, Thranduil's wife, Dis, etc.). Or different treatments for Tauriel (make her the actual daughter of Thranduil, since that's what the story treated her as, or make her an actual guard, instead of a "captain" who runs away).

I agree about the characters and that's one of the reasons why her character bugs me. Having Kili hurt was a great chance to give Oin some characterization about his medical background. Or to explore Fili and Kili's relationship.

But, no, it's all about Tauriel and Kili. All the other dwarves get the shaft in the third movie.

I just really, really can't get over the fact that they lied to the actress about the love triangle. It was horrific too.

I've heard that they shoehorned the triangle in later. Initially it was just a Kili/Tauriel thing but then the PTB decided there should be a triangle.

Whatever the case, it was so utterly pointless. I mean, I think the love story was bad with or without Legolas. Legolas' leg of things didn't really add anything. He could've done the same stuff but from a concerned older brother angle.

It was all just so needless.

I do agree with this. I liked Kili/Tauriel, but in DOS Legolas felt a bit more like an overprotective brother figure than anything. I wish they hadn't gone there with him being in love with her too.

I liked her well enough. And then I heard they were going to do an elf/dwarf romance and was like: "OK." And then the romance was so awful that I wish they'd just cut that out altogether and left her to just being a fighter.

I like Tauriel but I hated what they did with her, it was okay in DoS hell even the stupid romance wasn't too awful, but in BoFA she got completely shafted in the story and the romance was taken from 'this is kind of shitty but I can deal with it' to 'wtf am I even watching?'. And personally I felt that the romance took away screen-time from other characters and events we could have seen.(Why yes I am still bitter that Fili got completely ignored the entire fucking movie).

I like that they tried to add another lady in, and I'd never suggest she should have been removed completely, but that romance plot. Ugh, that didn't need to be there.
