SUPERNATURAL HAS A LOOOOOOONG HISTORY OF QUEERBAITING!!!!

No. No it doesn't. It has a couple instances of legit baiting and an acknowledgement of its fan base. And fans who see "deliberate" subtext in everything.

I seriously think these people need to give up, I'm all for more queer representation but the people who think the show is going to make Dean bi and/or Cas gay need to take a step back and realize what they're watching.

Especially when they act like the showrunners MUST make Dean bi and it's a horribly offensive thing that they haven't done it yet. I just don't think it's offensive if Dean is straight, if the writers feel he is straight then leave it alone.

And this is coming from a bi woman.

Seriously. I dropped the show after half a season because I was getting such a manly man grr "have I mentioned I'm a straight man?" feeling from him and it was irritating me. But I definitely wouldn't call it offensive. I don't like that there are so few shows with queer characters but it's the trend that can be considered offensive, not each individual show that stars straight people.

Yeah I want more queer representation but I think sometimes fandom barks up the wrong tree with it.

Plus I don't like the idea of a character's sexuality changing (or more accurately being revealed) because FANDOM wants it to happen, I'd rather these things be written organically in a way that makes sense to the character.

I think I also never want another Willow situation where she seemed to be written as sexually and romantically attracted to men until Joss randomly changed his mind and she was a lesbian (even though Joss plans out his plots he does randomly change his mind about things the longer shows go on.) And years later fandom still debates about whether she's gay or bi.

Oh, yes. "Gay now!" could be its own thread here.

Yeah the Willow thing annoyed me too. There are cases in real life of women having happy relationships with men but then identifying as a lesbian later on, but Willow's "I'm gay now" seemed to have more to do with not understanding how sexuality works than about acknowledging that sometimes these things are complicated. Plus I hate how lesbians and bisexual women end up fighting over characters and sometimes even real people. I'm not that bothered by a lot of the things that people complain about on tumblr around here, I just say that I disagree and move on, but those fights are really upsetting to me.

I used to think this. Then a lesbian friend talked about how she related to that aspect of Willow. Like, to her Willow was reacting so strongly and denying her previous attraction to men because of her struggles with her sexuality and trying to figure out who she was now. When in fact her sexuality had just changed, which does happen. So maybe sometime in the future Willow would be comfortable enough in her self to acknowledge that she used to be attracted to men even if she no longer is now.

I'm sure there are people who reacted like Willow, I'm just indulging in a rare (for me) bit of cynicism by doubting the writers were thinking about it that way. It's great that your friend related to her though. This is why we need lots more queer characters, because things like this aren't really wrong, it's just that there's so much diversity out there.

Sure, if by baiting you mean "that hug didn't end with fucking."

Re: Fandom Fights

And Teen Wolf.

Stiles being bi was baiting. Sterek is NOT.

Yes, what Jeff Davis said that one time was shitty (the 'we could be convinced' thing), but it's not queerbaiting. Queerbaiting must tie into the canon, too.

And in normal definitions, doesn't it mean there being actual scenes between the pairing that the fans think could be ambiguous, only for the writers to "NO HOMO" it? There is NOTHING like that about Stiles/Derek's interactions. They interacted a handful of times, and most of it was negative.

If "this ship got popular overnight based on nothing canonical" is queerbaiting now, then.. It's queerbaiting if they have scenes together, because WOW there are scenes but it's not canon romance! And if they don't, it's "ON PURPOSE TO SPITE THE SHIPPERS AND BAITING US"... okay.

That is my argument.
