Yea, the fact that they had to leave critical reviews (on apparently the same fic?) is weird. Why not at least give the students a variety of fics to read, and give them a choice of which one to comment on? (Though personally I think just asking them to review would've been better than asking them to review critically. What if someone genuinely liked the fic and couldn't find much fault in it? It seems rude to single out a specific author like that, though I agree with everyone saying "Once it's online, you don't have much control over it and need to prepare yourself.")

But I don't think OP should care about "real fans" or "organized fandom" because in the end fandom should be fun. If someone wants you to 'prove' yourself, or says you're less of a fan because you don't do this or that, you should ignore them. (Then go back to your business.)

I can definitely see the authors of the assigned fics feeling a bit dogpiled, and that's where I think it skirted the lines of etiquette a bit. It also adds a personal dimension to the idea of literary analysis that I don't think should really be there.

And I completely agree with your second paragraph! Fandom shouldn't be so serious, man.

Dogpiled is probably a good word for it if the reviews were pretty harsh. These issues could've been avoided if they had just discussed the fic in class.
