Text: I was reading some fo the “Our work is not for you” fllout after that incident with the uni lit course assigning fanfic and fic readers going ballistic over being read…

…without permission, which should have been my first clue.

And the purpose “organized fandom” popped up, and I realized:

I’ve been in fandom spaces for years, I’m a member (one way or another) of two different fan communities on Dreamwidth. I have an AO3 account.

And I certainly do not consider myself part of “organized fandom.”

I just showed up and started commenting. No one recruited me. I don’t pay dues. I just hang out and leave comments.

Now I understand why people always treat me a little coolly. I really don’t belong.

Well, I’m sorry, I had no idea I wasn’t a real fan, or what a real (organized) fan even was.

I’ll just stop coming here and bothering you people now.

s!b Two of my only fandom friends are really up in arms about “non-fans” reading their work and I’m like, what’s the difference/how do you even tell?
