Re: OP (also light spoiler)
(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)Rebecca's storyline is what drove me away from One Piece, quite possibly for good. It started off with such promise, like you said. And then Oda completely turned it around to use it as a mouthpiece for a 'women are delicate flowers who should be protected from doing anything' message. I mean, heck, the big subtext of the flashbacks she and the Soldier (Kyros) had was that 'fathers can't be there forever; they have to teach their children well enough that they can stand on their own someday.'
So what happens when Rebecca finally comes within sight of her goal, standing ready to fight the man who killed her mother? She panics, screams, cries, and tries to hide. And then her dad comes in to save her, because don't worry! Daddy's gonna be there forever to protect her; we were just kidding earlier.
I would have been happy with Rebecca fighting on her own -- there even was a convenient cliff edge nearby so she could win by ring out, in her usual style. I would also have been really happy with a father-daughter team fight -- Rebecca and Kyros working together to avenge their family. Maybe Rebecca could have used her dodging and deflection to lure out Diamante's attacks so Kyros could attack while he was off-balance. And, of course, there could always have been a truly surprising non-violent resolution that Rebecca could come up with. Whatever. There were a million ways to handle the resolution of the storyline that didn't involve making Rebecca into a helpless crying baby, and outright stating that was a good thing.
These days, I'm looking forward a lot more to other series in Jump. Food Wars has some great female characters (even if the art gets a little racy during the foodgasms). Gakkyu Hotei's also had a few decent female characters, and I'm looking forward to the introduction of Kijima, the third Divine Tongue. World Trigger's female characters are a little underplayed, but they're still treated as equals to the boys. And so on. I was a huge fan of One Piece for many years... but I don't feel the need to keep up with it when it's disappointed me so badly.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 06:41 am (UTC)(link)I was surprised by how entertaining Shokugeki no Soma is. The art is very good, all the food orgasm is hilarious. That there are plenty fanservice of guys next to the girls help.
I mostly just read gag manga these days. Next to Soma I love Ansatsu Kyoushitsu. It's fun and teach kids very good life lessons.
Sorry if my reply seems jumbled, for some reason my head feels very disoriented, i just can't seems to put my words straight. Being ESL doesn't help.
