People who flush with the toilet lid up. WHYY.

When you flush, a very fine spray of water (plus whatever else is in the bowl at the time) can mist up from the toilet bowl. It can then settle on nearby surfaces, and in most bathrooms that involves things you really don't want coated with fecal matter.

How realistic it is in terms of public health, who knows. I've never known or heard of a single person made sick from their own toothbrush just sitting on the bathroom shelf, but hey.

That really depends on the bathroom, doesn't it? I've been to many that have hydraulics like that, but others don't. Sometimes the flushing is just so weak it barely works - I doubt a spray is raised in the air several feet up and around.

Toilets generally don't work via hydraulics, though. The flush mechanism works by gravity, with the force of the water from the tank flushing the bowl and yes, even toilets with what seems like a weak flush is going to send up a spray. The water particles are quite small, which is what allows them to be widely broadcast. Think of it this way, a human sneeze can broadcast a spray of saliva and mucus more than 15 ft. away. Water vapor travels much further than you think, which is why it's a good idea to close the toilet lid before you flush.

I cannot stand this omg, I never let anyone use my personal bathroom. Close the lid! It's so unsanitary not to.

Oh god this. So fucking gross.

I haven't flushed the toilet with the lid up in years. I just figured out as a kid that some toilets splash water onto the seat, therefore they must also splash gross shit water elsewhere too.

For me it's a surety thing. I need to know that my dump has washed down the drain soi I'm going to witness it with my own two eyes.

Yeah yeah, I could just lift the lid back up after a flush to get the all clear, but that's a schrodunger's cat situation you're about to suggest >:U
