I think it's likely that whatever your intro to BL (or any other genre) might have been, you'll still have some affection for it even when you realize later on that it's intensely problematic.

Mine was also Gravitation (with a side of Ai no Kusabi, which is still the best yaoi anime I'd rec to anyone), and while I could still sit down now and rewatch it, I can also recognize and admit it has some terrible tropes going on. It just dresses them up with humor, whereas JR dresses them up with fluff and "Oh, but this is so romantic don't you know?"

I don't know if it's just down to how recent it was, but the JR fans are still incredibly defensive about how it's not really like all that other rapey BL, it's not really as bad as other things. Whether that'll change as they get more educated like it did with my 'generation' of yaoi fans, I don't know. I doubt it, but I can still hope.

There's also the fact that most BL that gets turned into anime is inevitably going to be the most bland and lowest-common-denominator stuff the production companies can find, because despite the size of the market for it there's still a great reluctance to actually produce any at the same production level as the best anime. So you get damaging and heteronormative crap like JR or Love Stage instead of (as has been mentioned in this thread) works like Yoneda Kou's or Asou Kai's, or any of the other actually decent mangaka out there that get drowned out in the wave of tripe like this masquerading as "good" BL.

"still the best yaoi anime I'd rec to anyone"

Seconded. I can't speak to the remake, but I love the original far more than Blue Wolves or Boku, for exmaple.

My most fervent wish is for Crimson Spell to be animated. tbh. It has, imo, a better-than average story, stunning visuals, and actual plot in addition to all its various tropes (e.g., the need to administer medicine by mouth as the "first kiss").

While we're on the AnK train, anyone read the translated light novels? I'm really interested in the world (yes, like reading Playboy for the articles ;) ) but after the Vampire Hunter D novel I read, I don't have high hopes for translations.

I've only read some of the first volume, but from what I can remember it was... sort of awkward, mostly in a stylistic kind of way. It wasn't terrible to the point where it was incomprehensible, but it felt as though the translation was trying to keep a lot of the original lyrical aesthetic and it wasn't quite making the leap from Japanese to English so it just read weirdly at times.

Having said that, a lot of the first volume is pretty dense with exposition and explanations of the world/society/politics etc. so that in itself might make the reading more awkward than more pacey scenes later on.

I have the first two volumes but I've yet to read them.

(fwiw, I also find the dystopian setting intriguing.)

I have up to the fifth, need the sixth, but apparently the last two novels were translated by a different company that decided to take liberties with the text (like cutting entire pivotal scenes).

To be honest, there is a LOT more worldbuilding in them, and the yaoi almost seems to take a backseat because of it. The style is flowery and can be hard to get through if you don't like the overwrought, almost Victorian style of writing, but it does flesh out the world quite a bit.

I still vastly prefer the first OAV series, though.

Even if they toned the sexing down, there's more than enough story.
