I was a BL initiate through Gravitation ten years ago and FAKE was the rival series that other fans tried to get Gravi fans to read/watch instead, but they got so uppity about it that I never wanted to touch FAKE. Besides the fact I hated the art and boy bands >>>>> cops.

I agree with you, but I'm confused how you think that Gravitation is better. The relationship between Shuichi and Yuuki is way more gross in those things you listed.

But Sekaiichi Hatsukoi is pretty nice in comparison!

I guess I was the odd one out after all, everyone always talks about their "initiation" series and I never had one...I just read doujin of pairings I liked. I tried Gravitation but that got pretty rapey pretty quick (and I didn't really like any of the characters in the first place), and most of the others I just wasn't into the concept or the art style so I never bothered.

I have heard that FAKE is decent, though.

Agreed with the "Junjou" secret. It's just all over the place (which is why I refuse to touch "Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi").

I actually forgot my intro to BL (not sure if it was FAKE or Uchida Kaoru's "Itsumo Miteiru Mono Dakara").

However, the best intro to BL is "Doushitemo Furetakunai" IMO. Yeah, it's pretty much angst to the point you'll be staring at a blank wall for days, but Yoneda Kou wrote the characters so realistically, it's literally a work of art. Suzuki Tsuta's "Sangen Tonari no Tooi Hito", "Akanai Tobira" and "Hand Which", are also good starters.

I've found most of the supposed "Gateways" into BL to be pretty awful. Gravitation, Loveless, Junjou. To be perfectly honest, a lot of the BL output is pretty awful and even today a lot of the problems I used to have with it, still exist. Still so much rape into love. Bleh.

I think the best "Gateway" is to sort of stumble on it organically in the course of normal anime/manga viewing/reading. For instance, watching Naruto and getting on the Naruto/Sasuke train.

But even then, as far as quality and lack of crappy tropes goes, people like what they like. Some people will move on to bigger and better things, while other cling to Junjou Romantica or 50 Shades of Grey or whatever it is that tickles their pickle and nothing anyone says will change that.

I think it's likely that whatever your intro to BL (or any other genre) might have been, you'll still have some affection for it even when you realize later on that it's intensely problematic.

Mine was also Gravitation (with a side of Ai no Kusabi, which is still the best yaoi anime I'd rec to anyone), and while I could still sit down now and rewatch it, I can also recognize and admit it has some terrible tropes going on. It just dresses them up with humor, whereas JR dresses them up with fluff and "Oh, but this is so romantic don't you know?"

I don't know if it's just down to how recent it was, but the JR fans are still incredibly defensive about how it's not really like all that other rapey BL, it's not really as bad as other things. Whether that'll change as they get more educated like it did with my 'generation' of yaoi fans, I don't know. I doubt it, but I can still hope.

There's also the fact that most BL that gets turned into anime is inevitably going to be the most bland and lowest-common-denominator stuff the production companies can find, because despite the size of the market for it there's still a great reluctance to actually produce any at the same production level as the best anime. So you get damaging and heteronormative crap like JR or Love Stage instead of (as has been mentioned in this thread) works like Yoneda Kou's or Asou Kai's, or any of the other actually decent mangaka out there that get drowned out in the wave of tripe like this masquerading as "good" BL.

Something I will never understand is how publicized BL art is so bad that it created the whole 'yaoi hand' joke whereas a lot of fanmade BL doujinshi looks so pretty. I have several favorite doujinshi artist but I can't think of many published yaoi/BL art that I like.
Maybe it's just the fandoms I'm in.

I dunno, Gravitation was pretty bad and full of "lol so randum XDD" moments. Also I'm still buttblasted that Tatsuha/Ryuichi never became a thing in canon. And when they did became a thing in the remixes? It was rape galore. And Loveless is... There might be a story over there... somewhere... if you squint really, really hard...

Anywway, most of the things I've noticed that have become really popular is because of word of mouth. Many really good series never become super popular like JR or Gravitation because people don't talk about them, or they are one-shots. You'd have to know your way "underground" to know where to find the true gems.

What the hell does Shungiku Nakamura have over the industry that her shit keeps getting animated? All the additional seasons and OAVs and a fucking movie. Is Japan just that thirsty for unfocused eyes and ruler-straight chins? Junjou and Sekaiichi could have the best stories in the world and they'd still be fucking ugly. Why can't animated BL ever look good? We're told all these guys are meant to be so pretty and it's such an informed attribute because THE ART IS SO FUCKING AWFUL.
