I don't agree at all, but I did once get a "...wow" when a friend showed me a clip of one of his shows and asked for my opinion.

Also, I'm still annoyed at The Invention of Lying after all these years and it's the closest time I come to being offended as a Christian. I'm fine with "sky pixie" or "sky fairy", I'm fine with suggesting that a flying spaghetti monster makes just as much sense, I'm fine with any expression of disdain you want to make, but for some reason the "old man in the sky" thing really annoys me. I've been trying to figure out why for years but I still don't know.

The Invention of Lying is offensive and stupid and bad for a million reasons, including that one, and many others.

What a shitty fucking project.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Gervais' douchey atheism is the thing I don't like about him. He has nothing on Bill Maher though. That guy proves that atheists can be just as bigoted and conservative as the rest, and as an atheist myself I want nothing to do with him.

Bill Maher doesn't know how to use social media outside of Twitter, he can't even tag things properly on Tumblr, he wouldn't be on Fandomsecrets.

QED

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Bill Maher made me question my atheism. He also made me much more respectful and tolerant as an atheist. He made me realize how horrible atheists could be. So thanks, Bill.

I agree with this. I don't generally find most anti-religious things offensive because I'm usually of the mind that people can believe what they want and also that frankly there is enough horrible stuff that comes out of Christians (and those of other faiths as well) that I have a hard time being offended by people thinking religion is horrible.

That being said, I found that The Invention of Lying crossed the line for me, though I can't completely articulate why. Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins are the only other people who have crossed that line for me. I like Gervais still, but that was just bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, Religulous was pretty on the nose, for me, and I'm Christian....why all the Bill Maher hate in this thread, anons? A lot of what he says about organized religion is spot-on.

It isn't what he says per say it is the way he says it. I do think a lot of what he says is spot on, but he goes out of his way to be offensive.

Theory: Bill Maher is generally an extremely annoying smug cock. So people will dislike him in whatever capacity they encounter him.

Don't have any strong opinions on Maher (I don't pay attention to him), but I get where philstar is coming from. Sometimes it isn't so much the content of what's being said, but the way the person expresses it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Maher can be spot on but he can also be a dick who has his own prejudices and I think it can be tough for people to get past the "he's a dick" part and appreciate when he's right.

For some people once you've crossed a line with them, they never want to agree with you. I don't generally see things as that black and white but it's not an uncommon stance.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
(raised lib Christian, more or less agnostic, fwiw)

It annoys me that he uses misogyny as part of his religious tirades, while being pretty sexist himself.

It baffles me that he claims to be a smart skeptic but goes off on all kinds of antivax, anti-germ theory tirades. It's a lot easier to prove that antivax is ridiculous than it is to prove that God absolutely positively does not exist.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really remember much about the Invention of Lying (not my favorite project of his, I considered the movie just okay) but I've always kind of appreciated that Gervais jokes about his atheism. I'm sorry "old man in the sky" bothered you, that sucks.

This is just coming from my atheist perspective though, I was treated pretty horribly for being an atheist my entire life and to this day still have to hide it from some people. I appreciate celebs who are open about it and talk about it, not that I want them to offend anyone but I think sometimes people don't realize how much shit someone can take for not being part of a faith.

I'm not even so much complaining here as wondering again "why the hell does this bother me when nothing else does???" I can sit through the most aggressively anti-theist or just anti-Christian diatribes and just find it interesting and honestly kind of refreshing because Christianity is so much the standard and the assumed default, but this one phrase irritates me and I don't get it.

And now I feel like I need to add a disclaimer that I don't think just talking about why they don't believe counts as an atheist disrespecting religion. There are some Christians who act like that and it makes me roll my eyes. I'm just saying that I'm not even bothered by most things that are legitimately insulting so this is confusing to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT. Sometimes things can just hit you, it's understandable. I can take lots of offensive humor myself but every once in a while a random scene or line will get to me, I don't think these things are always logical responses but emotional ones.

And btw I appreciate your view and it's nice to come across Christians who are willing to hear an atheist viewpoint without their default being to take offense. There are definitely some atheists that are offensive and could be better at expressing their viewpoints, but sometimes people are legitimately just trying to open a discussion and get vitriol back. I wish it was easier to talk more openly about these things because I legitimately find religion interesting, I just don't have any faith myself.

About as much shit as someone who is, depending on the circs. The idea that secularism, which is very much the norm where I live, is uniquely disadvantaged, is pretty much an American POV.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No it really fucking isn't.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm from intensely religious part of Europe, ruled by homophobic, climate-change denying, corrupt politicians who invariably claim the bible as their justification for their prejudice and criminal misdeeds. Or laughably after they're found out claim god has forgiven them (so that's okay then).

So no. Not just an American problem or POV.

lol?

In addition to parts of Europe, as anon illustrated, what about Islamic countries?

There are also places that are so heavily religious that I could imagine being areligious would be pretty awkward (like much of Latin America).

Ironically, I actually don't really see it as being a huge disadvantage in the US, unless you come from a particularly conservative area. Of course my bias as a lifetime city-dweller might be showing...

I think the reason the Old Man in the Sky thing pisses me off so much is because...I don't know any Christians who actually believe God is an "old man in the sky". That's a very outdated idea, and in fact may never have been a literal interpretation of God, just one seen in art. Yet others seem to believe that's what Christians actually think. :/

(Disclaimer: I'm specifically responding to your comment; idk who this guy is or what he apparently said)
