I agree that it's addictive but that doesn't mean it's good

I think tumblr is kind of like the, I don't know, the McDonald's Chicken Nuggets or the potato chips of online communities or something

It's actually kind of completely awful for a lot of the things that make a community good and its structure actively encourages a lot of toxic behavior, but at the same time, it's completely addictive

that's not a good thing

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're taking this a bit too seriously. The internet shouldn't take up so much of your life that you're comparing it to food, and no site will really be healthy.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
it's an analogy, anon

obviously i don't think internet sites are as important as food

But McDonald's Chicken Nuggets and potato chips aren't really food? Like they are, but not "staples to live" kind of foods. In fact they're extremely unhealthy and much like candy in the sense that they're more like treats than daily nourishment.

In fact, I eat potato chips and McDonald's Chicken Nuggets maybe once every three months whereas I'm on the internet every single day.

So maybe junk food shouldn't take up so much of your life that you're comparing it to the internet, anon, and nothing covered in grease will really be healthy.

what huh

i mean that is

what

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you not familiar with analogies or interpreting them? Anon wasn't comparing tumblr to food in terms of how important it is to one's life, anon was comparing one type of food to another as a metaphor for how substantial it is and by extension, how it should be taken in moderation in one's diet, i.e. life.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this description, this is how I feel about Tumblr too

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of subjective, though -- "things that make a community good", I mean. And nothing is going to be good for everything. The structure does have some drawbacks, and...

Hmm, I guess the only thing I really disagree with you about (unless you're saying it has no good points) is that I don't really see how it's all that addictive?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm.

Well, that's not really the part that I expected to have to argue for, because OP started by saying it was addictive.

But if you asked me, I would say that it's addictive because of the almost infinite unending amount of content out there, the constant gratification in terms of seeing things you like and interacting with others even in a very 'light' way, and then also the emotional intensity that people give the content especially when you get into stuff like social justice and arguments

not sure if that makes sense

OP

nayrt

most popular sites have addictive properties to them, suppose they're so common place people don't really notice them

like and notes stats for one. the way the dashboard is set up, you have to be consistently active for people to notice you. and the level of interaction and reach you get is almost completely dependent on how many followers you have, which you acquire by being active.

If you don't know what makes it addictive then you either haven't used it or your not using it right.

People always complain about tumblr, but most of them don't even know how to get the most out of it.

The only thing I hate about tumblr is SJW harassing people.

*shrug* I hate the format and lack of community/commenting. I guess it could be addictive, but I'm already addicted to so many other things on the internet. If I were looking to fill a time or boredom void then I would probably spend more time on tumblr, I guess. But it doesn't meet a need for community or discussion, which is a big part of what I come online for, especially when I'm less able to interact with people face-to-face.

I totally get this OP. I've been sucked in too. I just started watching a few blogs, then those blogs lead to more. Now I'm following more than 50. I still like Livejournal/Dreamwidth much better though. Besides the interaction, I find the quality of the content overall is better. I don't think I'd be on Tumblr so much if my current fandom wasn't more active there than anywhere else.

I feel similarly; I wish there was an easier way to communicate and wish there was more meta and the like, but I still enjoy reblogging pretty gifs and fanart. It's a quick and easy way to see what's going on in fandom, too.

I think I'll always miss LJ (and it isn't even remotely the same experience), but if you like shiny graphics, art and dumb text posts (I often do) then tumblr is easy to get sucked into.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr didn't take away fandom from livejournal. The new lj owners completely RUINED the site for fandoms. It's basically an open secret that they didn't want fandom and the way we interacted and the things we did on there.

We had to find somewhere else. Tumblr just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically this. LJ very obviously became and incredibly fandom-unfriendly platform in a very short space of time (despite the fact that most of their revenue at the time was coming from fannish blogs buying not only several paid LJs at a time, but also icon add-ons etc. They cared even more about getting rid of fandom than they did with protecting their revenue stream from it, which says a lot)

I still wish the migration had gone to DW instead, but the truth it Tumblr was in the right place at the right time with the LJ exodus. If it wasn't Tumblr it'd be some other site and that'd be getting hate too.

I'll concede it's a great medium for fan art and picture-based things, but I hate it judst replaced things altogether. It's shit for communication, and that's a huge part of what I like in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't "replace" anything. LJ tanked, DW never took off, so tumblr is just the next evolution. And I say this as someone still nostalgic for the true community of LJ but loving my tumblr identity now.

Text: I used to hate Tumblr and used to be really annoyed that it has taken fandom away from places like LiveJournal. Now that I’ve gotten into Tumblr, though, I understand it. The site is addictive. I miss the ability to really interact, but reblogging and adding amusing tags is really addictive.

That's the thing though....I don't really contribute anymore. It's just endless reblogs AND walking on egg shells.

Yeah, I hear ya on the addiction part. I'm a rabid completionist who tries to follow everyone's everything, and tumblr makes that impossible, so I would just burn hours scrolling.

Just as well I can barely use it now. Thanks, old compy!
