What do you feel you missed out on as a child?

Harry Potter. My mom didn't want me to read it (she thought it was too popular, or something). I feel like I missed out on a fun book reading experience. :(

You can still read it! I'm rereading it, because I feel like I don't remember it well/don't recall its impact, if any, other than identifying with Hermione and appreciating it more by the time I reached high school/also for fic research.

I think reading certain things when you get older can help you better appreciate/understand it. I am definitely enjoying HP right now. You should too!

I'm always finding more stuff I wish I'd known about or gotten into as a child.

My big one is that I wish I'd learned a language when I was REALLY young. I find it so difficult now and I really love language so I wish I had learned a second language during my formative years.

Also, books like Alice in Wonderland and such. I have so many books that I love now that I didn't read when I was a kid. I wonder how I would've seen them if I had read them through the lens of a child.

Going out. My mother has extreme social anxiety and I couldn't go to public events, anywhere with crowds, stuff like that. Sucks, but it did help when I got a little older and could go out with friends.

I kind of regret not joining a sports and/or martial arts club when I was a kid. Despite always being on the slightly pudgy side, I was actually pretty active and sporty and I get so weirdly envious seeing our neighbour's children head out for tennis training every weekend (not that tennis would have been my sport of choice, but it's this sense of "I could have really had a great time").
I also think that I probably could have had a great time joining the scouts.

The animated Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I feel like I would have loved them if I had seen them as a kid, but as an adult I can't get past the cheesiness to watch them.

A lot of things! I didn't go out much, wasn't particularly involved in school sports or activities (besides book club, lmao) and though I had friends it was never more than a small, close-knit group.

Girl Scouts. I always wondered how it felt to be one of them.

I got kicked out after the first day. I was a weird kid.

Like the anon above, I was also kicked out, or rather: 'politely asked to leave.' That's what happens when you beat up the scout leader's brat.

Honestly, it was a fairly terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend it.

You have to buy a uniform (sash or vest), sell cookies, do some fun stuff, go on trips. I was only ever a Brownie, took a trip to their HQ, didn't go camping, and learned how to sign the alphabet. And the "On my honor..."

I never made it past Brownie as it became out of my family's budget, and the troop soon dissolved. I had a pretty good experience. You should buy their cookies. So damn good. Also, learn a few things, go camping, it's things that I suppose one could learn on their own, but it builds character, teamwork, etc. when you're young. I still wish I had learned the knot tying stuff. Off to youtube, I guess.

A lot, really. A best friend. Really getting good at a hobby. Quality time with my dad (he worked abroad a lot). My family that still lived behind the iron curtain and that we couldn't visit. A lot of pop culture, in retrospect.

So many television shows and movies that EVERYONE my age has seen that I hadn't even heard of until adulthood. I have no idea if this is because my parents stopped me watching them, or because I genuinely just preferred reading, writing and playing outside.

I've never played Monopoly or learned to ride a bike.

Oh man, riding a bike is great. It's never too late to learn! Hit up your local bike shop and ask them to teach you!

Actually, one of my friends co-owns the local bike shop. I've never actually asked him though.

I've tried a few times, but I'm not the most coordinated person and the result was blood and the destruction of innocent mailboxes.

Ouch. I can understand an aversion to bicycling after that. There's still the tried and true method of learning to ride on a lawn though.

Terry Pratchett.

Everyone I know has been in full-on black armband mode for a week, and I respect the pain they're going through, having lost an author that meant so much to them, in such an unfair way. But I can't join them.

I think there's an opportunity window to fall in love with Discworld, and I missed it. By the time I tried the books (yes, I tried several, from multiple different points) I was an adult, and just found them kinda twee and cutesy. And I bet if I'd read them when I was twelve, I'd have gotten the pure joy so many other people got from them, and probably had a great time.

being gay I think fucked up a lot of those childhood milestones you're supposed to reach like your first crush, or holding hands with someone, or kissing your crush, going steady, etc for me

and blah blah blah, I know not every straight person has those milestones either but it pisses me off in hindsight that societal situations being what they are screwed me out of having the choice to have them
