Re: St. Patrick's Day [TW for genocide, eliminationism, harsh language]

(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to state for the record that as a proud pagan, I think this holiday is fucking disgusting. It's a celebration of the subjugation and genocide of the indigenous Irish pagan community, a proud, strong and vibrant people if there ever was one.

Do people not know their history? Under St. Patrick, the proud pagans of Ireland were put to the sword and forced to convert or die. If that's not genocide, then what is?

Whatever it is, it's horrible. That a holiday has sprung up to celebrate cultural and literal genocide makes me physically ill. They don't even treat it as a solemn event, but as some sort of... drunken bacchanalia. I have no respect for people who engage in the kind of filthy debauchery I see on this holiday. People just use it as an excuse to get drunk on shitty beer (why would anyone drink that stuff? Is there not wine? Beer is for uneducated meshbacks who watch Faux News and beat their spouses.) and dress in green, and let me tell you, for most people doing this, green is NOT their color! (I of course wear black, as a proud pagan.)

Please, do yourself a favor, research the history of the proud pagans of Ireland and the awful truth about this disgusting "holiday". Education is important in this time of ignorance and hatred.

I didn't quite know this was totally tongue-in-cheek until "of course I wear black."

Well done, OP.

I think you should wear green and join in a drunken bacchanalia. I promise not to put you to the sword.

OP

I really thought this place was more progressive. That you people were open-minded and accepting. That even with the current virulent thread of "anti-SJW" hate you still believed in social justice, in the rights of womyn, people of color, and those of "alternative" beliefs like paganism, Scientology, and pastafarianism.

Goddess fucking damn I was wrong.

You people disgust me as a proud pagan. But it's okay. I will continue to hope for a day when enlightenment strikes. Until then, peace upon you all!

Honestly, St. Patrick's Day in America has so little to do with the original celebrations anyway. For me, at least, it's about celebrating being Irish American. And yes, for some it's about getting drunk.

I'm not dismissing the horrible implications of the original, but... meanings and traditions change. Christmas and Easter are based on different holidays, which in turn probably derived from even older holidays.

I don't think it's a good idea to bring up Christmas and Easter around Proud Pagan Anon.

Oddly, I actually did just spend twenty odd minutes reading up on the Christian conversion of Ireland. I mean, I'm getting more 'trade links, Christian slave networks, evangelical preaching, and savvy political connections with converted ex-pagan kings' from it than 'fire and sword and inexplicable Christian armies', but thanks for reminding me to read up on these things again. Haven't done that since my Early Medieval Archaeology modules six years ago.

Re: St. Patrick's Day [TW for genocide, eliminationism, harsh language]

(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't you post this last year? I swear there was a trolly anti St Paddy's pro pagan rant.

Which makes me sad, because I'm actually a pagan, and I also think St Patrick and his hagiography is obnoxious. But the modern holiday was essentially invented in the US as Irish Pride day (this is a fact). It really had nothing to do with St Patrick.

Anyway, you're trolling, and I guess you're our resident "proud pagan" troll - which I admit is funny and more original than the other trolls. But I'd love to have a serious discussion on obnoxious saints and forced conversions, and you're ruining it, dude.

Re: St. Patrick's Day [TW for genocide, eliminationism, harsh language]

(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Dear OP,

I would think that the very fact this holiday has become a bacchanalia puts it in sharp contrast to the personage and religion it purports to honor. What would horrify a saint more than people going out and getting completely, embarrassingly shit-faced in his name?! Not to mention the immorality and shenanigans that will undoubtedly follow their inebriation and lowered morals /inhibition?

That being said, I hope you find some reason to celebrate today. It's my birthday, made all the more awesome by the fact that so many people are having a great time enjoying the day.

I can't believe you're doing this again this year. I'm impressed at your commitment, but don't you get bored?

I do find it funny that this was posted right after the thread about the current uselessness of "TW." Good illustration, OP.

Black for mourning, or black because pagan? I wear green so I don't get pinched by randoms, but it's the same green as the local flora and fauna, so arguably more pagan.

And yes, St. Paddy's is nothing more than excuse for North Americans to get slobberingly drunk. Like Cinco de Mayo.
