Students approached it like they were dissecting something like LotR or Twilight-- published literature to be analyzed mercilessly.
Writer was understandably wtf at this random flood of paragraphs going "I liked the symbolism of X, but the way the text jumped around in the timeline was disorienting in a way that I don't think the author intended. It seemed to be assuming the reader is aware of all individuals and events already, and doesn't bother to introduce or explain them" etc. etc.
