Dude, there's assholes in every community. No matter what group you consider yourself a part of, there will be those assholes that make you all look bad.

Keeping a habit like fanfiction a 'dirty little secret' because there are some people who are assholes is a stupid thing that an insecure person, or a person who is convinced the world judges as hard as they do does.

The vast majority of fanfic is written just for fun, written by people who often just want to get the ideas out as quickly as possible. Why you think that would mesh well with any sort of assigned critical reading is beyond me.

I liked one anon's analogy: if a group of football fans are having a knock around in a park, they're technically playing football in public. It doesn't mean it's acceptable for a load of sports fans to turn up, unsolicited, and start heavily criticising the way they play.

I guess you've been spared thus far from seeing the epic whiny meltdown professional authors throw over negative reviews (which, in virtually every case, were more constructive and informed than the random "I don know what the hell you're writing about but I'll tear it up anyway" 'reviews' that spurred this wank).

It's cute that you seem to think this kind of behavior is solely the province of fanfic writers.

sigh. here, poppet: original fiction is like building a rudimentary house. fanfiction is like renovating it and adding rooms and filling in some missing floorboards or adding walls where there weren't any, or tearing down walls and making bigger spaces.

Now imagine much of the construction is invisible to anyone who never saw the original house. The new house will look strange to them, sure. It will seem off.

But if they are intelligent, they can see where to walk, where the walls should be. They won't appreciate the house as much as someone who can see the walls for what they should be, of course.

The renovator is as much an artist as the original crafter. It's actually quite difficult to work with warped floorboards.

None of this is to say I don't agree with you: no one has a right to complain if someone views the house and makes comments about it. It's right there on the information superhighway.

I would say the authors should listen to those comments that address technical issues (you forget a nail) and chuck the ones that miss the point because they never saw the staircase right in front of them.

I agree that it's kind of ridiculous how some people conceptualize fanfic as a private occupation between friends when it isn't, it really, really isn't.

I disagree that you can use that to make some sweeping condemnation of fanfic. This sort of behavior is not unique to fanfic and it isn't universal in fanfic.

I mean, is it a really a fucking surprise that amateur writers doing it for fun and in their free time aren't always going to be writing masterpieces?

I don't know why people expect fic writers to take criticism if they don't want it. That's entitlement on your part when you feel you have the right to tell me I'm having fun the wrong way.

I agree with everything in this secret. As a fanfic writer myself, I've always been so annoyed with other writers who can't take critique, because I've always done it without chucking a tantrum since I was 12 years old. So all the excuses, "you hurt my feelings!" and "I'm only young!" it's all bullshit. Critique still hurts my feelings but you gotta suck it up if you put your work out there. If your doing it "just for fun," then fucking email it to your friends, don't post it in public where everyone is ALLOWED, ENCOURAGED AND EXPECTED to critique it.

Anyone ever notice how these arguments always seem to assume that all critique is good rather than acknowledging that it's a skill that needs to be learned like any other skill? But some people really don't want to hear feedback on their critiquing skills.

I really just came to say that a lot of fanfic is not shit. Some fanfics are very good. And they're free.

However, although I totally understand why fic writers don't like getting (the wrong sort of) attention -- and I, personally, would die of embarrassment if any of my family, RL friends, or work colleagues read my stories and knew that I had written them -- I don't think we can expect people to treat our work differently from other writing. I was particularly surprised when someone told me that another fanfic writer had asked his permission to set a story in 'his' universe and he'd said no. We play in other people's universes all the time; I don't think we can refuse to let someone else play in ours!

The problem for me would be that those comments are for the instructor, not for me. Even when the asshats choose to grace fanfic authors with their uninvited criticism and then spit on them for being "ungrateful" when they're not interested in the random advice--not there aren't polite ways to leave concrit--at least they're not just coming up with something constructive to say after they very well browsed over it during breakfast. I wouldn't have liked an influx of comments amounting to a bunch of white noise any more than I'd usually appreciate the high-and-mighty anonymous critics.
