Get the fuck out of here with that "vast majority of fic is terrible" bullshit. So tired of hearing that one. It's just another way people knock fic writers and belittle our hobby. I mean, is it a really a fucking surprise that amateur writers doing it for fun and in their free time aren't always going to be writing masterpieces?

I don't know why people expect fic writers to take criticism if they don't want it. That's entitlement on your part when you feel you have the right to tell me I'm having fun the wrong way.

I also find it funny that people who use that argument apparently think academia should care about terribad works.

What do you mean?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Secret OP thinks nearly all fanfics are terrible. Secret OP also seems to think it's okay, no, useful for students to be assigned to read and publicly critique these terrible works of fiction.

Whereas I say: What the hell purpose does looking at any work from an academic viewpoint if you think it's dogshit? If you think it's shit, you have even less of a reason to defend the professor's approach.

People learn from bad writing all the time though.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Do they post reviews personally to all the bad writing they learn from, though?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've yet to contact any of the authors of the shitty books I've read personally. According to you, I should?

I didn't say anything about people reviewing bad writing, I was just arguing with the idea that there's nothing to be learned from reading and analyzing it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Which is exactly what this course did not do.

Of course reading and analyzing is helpful. Publically posting your crit, however, is totally irrelevant to that.

I'm sorry I didn't make it clearer that I was going on a tangent and not commenting directly on this situation. I think this was a terrible assignment. I just disagree with the angle the anon I originally replied to was putting on it.

Yep. OP's just a fanfic hater, it seems.

Lots of literature can be taught with contexts other than artistic merit.

This always bothers me as well, like I don't even find most fanfic that bad either? Like okay I wouldn't say it's better than some books I've read, but if I enjoy reading it that's all that matters to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
No one is telling you you're "having fun the wrong way." They're telling you that your fun, which you presented to them as supplementary entertainment is not satisfying their need for fun.

And guess what? They totally have the right to tell you that. Just like you have the right to tell them to fuck off or to complain about how mean they are and lie about how "they don't have the right!!"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
They were students. They had no need for fun of that sort. They were forced to read these particular kink fics and leave critical comments. That's one hell of a difference to someone in my fandom being interested in the kink and pairing of my fic and ending up not liking my work for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I was speaking in more general terms, as fingals appeared to be as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
In the case of this class, though, they're actually saying they don't know the source of your fun, don't understand why you're having fun, but here are ways you can improve your fun experience anyway. It makes zero sense.

I have a counter to this, but I'm so woozy right now that my brain is just amused thinking about someone commenting on one of my fics and telling me I didn't fill up their fun-o-meter. Fuck, I'd laugh for days.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol happy to amuse.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Shit, most published works aren't masterpieces, and a whole hell of a lot of them are fanfic levels of terrible in their initial few drafts. Expecting people doing this stuff for fun to match up to people who have professional editors (and, frequently, research aides) is just stupid.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a surprise that fic writers wouldn't put as much effort into editing as professional writers would, but it is surprising you'd feel they can put it up on the Internet, on sites that invite comments no less, and believe no one has the right to comment if they're going to comment that they think the fic is terrible. That's what the friendslock is for, if you (general you) really want to prevent that. The writers don't have to take the criticism, but I'm legit boggling at the idea that no one has the right to give it, and don't see how that's become a rational expectation.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-03-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's not really what I said. Of course people have a write to comment of fic, but people who dog on fic writers like to act like we should welcome any and all comments no matter the content and it's entitlement if we don't want want criticism of our fics.
