(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 04:43 am (UTC)(link)Text: This recent kerfluffle over the professor who had her students review fanfic has convinced me that fanfic writers are the biggest bunch of self-entitled whiny assholes alive and this is why fanfic will always be that dirty little habit you have to keep secret.
Because the VAST majority of fanfic is shit, and the vast majority of fanfic writers can’t stand being told it’s shit. Desspite putting their work up in a public forum for anyone to see, there is apparently an “intended audience” and they can live in their safe bubble pretending their work is actually good and wouldn’t be ripped to shreds by anyone not a part of their pseudo friends-list.
People can make all the noise they want about eons of published works being fanfic of other earlier works. original creators and published authors also put their work out in a public forum for anyone to see, only they actually suck up the fucking fact that it means ANYONE can see and comment, the idea of claiming only an “intended audience” should comment is bullshit, that any fandom built around their work is largely for the purpose of critiquing and picking it apart just as much as appreciating it, and that they don’t get to live in a bubble of yes-men protecting their feelings. This is what will always make canons more worthy of respect than fanfic.
It is, however, gratifying to know that people are bullshitting when they say “IDC what you say, I’m going to write my terrible fic anyway.” Apparently, leave them a bad review and they’ll fold like the wusses they are.
Tl;dr - Seriously fandom, grow a thicker skin.
