FWIW, I agree, OP. I feel like fandom didn't used to be like this when I was first getting into it. People would criticize your fics right, left and center. I got virulent criticism ALL THE TIME back in the early days of fanfiction.net, and oh yes, 14-year-old me threw hissyfits, I stopped reading reviews at all for years because I couldn't take criticism, and then I eventually fucking grew up. And I'm a better writer now.

I wand to blame tumblr for this hugbox mentality of "only positive things allowed", but it's more endemic than that. I think it's part of why I'm falling out of this side of fandom and going more on reddit and such - the whole "cult of nice", as another commenter described it above.

I think the whole argument of "it's just fun! we're not trying to be professionals!" is such bullshit. Whatever you do in life, be it your hobbies or your job or whatever, you should ALWAYS be trying to improve and grow. And taking criticism about things - fanfiction included - is part of that. GETTING BETTER IS FUN. Humans take basic psychological pleasure in gaining skills and getting better at things. Holding yourself back because you're afraid to get hurt is absolutely childish.

This whole bubble-world mentality drives me nuts. Sometimes I think that's why SJ can get so nasty... in the cult of nice, you're only allowed to be mean when you have the moral high ground, so you really let it rip then.

Actually, I read a book recently called "Generation Me" that talks about how the current generation of young adults is measurably more self-centered than previous generations and yet paradoxically cannot take criticism at all. It comes from the whole self-esteem movement, "you're perfect just the way you are" blah blah blah.

It strikes me particularly because most of my circle of friends is Asian and their parents are the opposite - super critical and pressuring them to do better all the time. I think (speaking generally, exceptions exist, etc.) white parents have raised a spoiled generation of whiners who are addicted to praise, quite frankly.
