I hate the really violent or psycho break up songs. The ones about getting revenge.

Before He Cheats sorta bothers me for that reason. I listen to that song and like "um you need to chill. also that's pretty illegal.". And it still bothers me that the girl is trashing the "other girl" she's made up in her head. I know it's hard but, blame the dude who's cheating, not the person he may very well have lied to to rope in.

I mean do people not think guys (or girls) lie about being single when they cheat?

Ugh I agree. Maybe it's because I've never been in a situation where I've been cheated on, but past breakups usually has made me feel sad. It's the level of aggression that bothers me.

And yes, definitely, if there's cheating, I think your (ex) significant other is the one who should feel the rage, not person they cheated with, since as you said, they might not have known about the relationships.

I guess it's easier to blame the mysterious other woman/man who went and stole your partner from under you?

Well, in that specific song, I suppose she does blame the guy more. It's his car she's trashing.

Regarding your second point, "Jolene" is my most hated offender because I love the music and vocals so much and they're being wasted on a "blame the other woman" song.

I really like the song Jolene, but it may be because I've always thought that the narrator of the song subconsciously had a crush on Jolene as well (what with all the odes to her beauty and the "Your smile is like a breath of spring/Your voice is soft like summer rain" lines. Some of it felt a little too specific).

That's absolutely my reading as well. "Please don't steal my man away from me, because you're just so gorgeous and sexy nobody could resist you, please don't fuck my boyfriend." I picture Jolene thinking "Um, I've barely met your boyfriend, so... wasn't really planning to? I think you've been giving this a lot more thought than I have. But thanks for all the nice and... very specific... comments about my looks and my body... I guess..."
