Is this a general you or a specific you?

Is it the same people, though? I do agree that I think there is too much of wanting the "right" female character, though in a lot of ways that stems from the fact that there are fewer female than male characters so there is more pressure for the women to fit more categories and personalities. That being said, mostly I see people complaining about one side of your list or the other, not both.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone is disliking female characters consistently and is checking off all those tick boxes then yeah, I can see your point. But if you're talking about various people who have a variety of issues with characters, then it's a bit more complicated.

There are reasons to dislike characters that don't have to do with prejudice. And it can be just as bad to put women on a pedestal because that's really not what equality means.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Different people say different things, different groups of women will have different needs representation-wise. Shutting all of it down with "you're never happy!!!" is counter-productive.

Such an improvement on Fred.

The main reason I was SO devastated by the cancellation of Angel: no more Illyria :'-(

Or...

Sometimes it's sexism.

But sometimes it's people giving a million reasons for their hate of a female character that they can't articulate but that just rubs them the wrong way.

Like me, I don't like Aang in Avatar The Last Airbender. I don't know WHY (because he's a nice kid and well written) but he just rubs me the wrong way.

You can't do that with a female character though, so some people make tons and tons of excuses.

It might be sexism. Or it might just be people trying to cover their asses.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been in fandom for longer than most people here have been alive, and I've never actually known anyone who dislikes all female characters. I'm beginning to think this is a strawman argument. Most of my fandoms have an unpopular female character or two, and they're unpopular with good reason, because they're shitty. But the same fandoms all have unpopular male characters who are unpopular for the same reason. Yet fans talk about hating that one female character and are still accused of sexism, sometimes even when they talk about hating male characters in the same sentence.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll counter your anecdotal data with my anecdotal data.

I may not have been in fandom longer than you, but I have been in it long enough to see some girls and women declare that they only like male characters because there are NO GOOD FEMALE CHARACTERS! I've even seen it used as an argument on some f!s discussion "back in the day". There was even a "Strong Female Character" spreadsheet somebody created some years back where they reduced about 70 female characters to one-line tropes and declared that there were no good female characters.

I think it has actually died down a bit these days, through there still is a tendency for some in fandom to hold female characters to higher standards.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was a flowchart/decision tree, not a spreadsheet -- at least if you're thinking of what I'm thinking of -- but I agree it was full of shit.

ohhhh man I remember that stupid fucking flowchart

back in the day I was exactly like those fans and, as a result, I couldn't even WRITE female characters without reducing them to cardboard cutouts

now I know better

The invisible, unattainable standard defense. I'm with you OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've said all those things about different characters too. B/c for me the ones I like are the middle ground between those extremes. I dislike characters that live for romance and those that shun it and act like they're above it. I dislike too many flaws and too few. I like average women being average normal people.

That being said, there *are* characters I like and if this person can't find a single one, that's not a good sign.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of agree with this. It gives me a massive head ache. There's always the female character who is too tough, too flawed etc. And then there's the female character who isn't tough enough and shows emotion (so yuck).

I love both male and female characters a whole lot. But with female characters that's the only time people will think the character sucks because she's interested in romance or is too angry. You get my point.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
To clarify because multiple people asked: this is one specific person. He's driving me crazy because he finds some reason to dislike every female character, and at this point I'm just like, no. It's pretty clearly the femaleness that's bothering you at this point, not the way they're written.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah if it's *every single one* this person sounds like they have issues.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds *intensely* annoying, OP. And would piss me off, too.

Oh god that would piss me off to no end as well, not liking some female characters is one thing, but if every single one is poorly written according to this dude? I really doubt it's because of poor writing.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that would annoy me too , OP.

I'd just be like: "ADMIT IT ALREADY, YOU HATE GIRLS. JUST SAY IT."

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If he can't find even a single, solitary example, then it's not media or how the characters are portrayed, it's him. You'll never be able to convince him though, because he sounds just smart enough to rationalize why he just so happens to dislike every female character ever.
