Oh god, there are so many examples of this and people eat it up every time... can mention AnoHana, Clannad, Kanon, Planetarian, Air off the top of my head.

I'd like a story about a girl whose cute male love interest dies. Give me a story about her pain for once and not his.

Agreed. There are a few in that genre I genuinely like but generally I don't like being told, "Look how sad this is! BE SAD! ARE YOU CRYING YET? Also look how moe this sick girl who's like 12 is let's all creepily fap over our dying waifu. ISN'T THIS SO SAD."

i wanted to like this show but i could barely make it past the first few episodes. the animation is so stunning that i'm still very tempted.

it's pretty telling that this is the more popular two-cour show this season, when imo shirobako deals with interpersonal relationships with far more class.

Actually Shirobako and Your Lie in April are my two favorite shows this season, largely because I find them both extremely good.

Agreed. My best beloved and I were extraordinarily impressed with Your Lie in April, not just the art, but the story. The youngsters actually felt like extremely intelligent, sophisticated 13-year-olds. The girl started out like a magic pixie dream girl, but became real. She went out fighting, and the stry was as much hers as the male lead. The final episode was pretty much a teeny-tiny masterpiece.

I only ever see Clannad and Kanon getting shit, but I know what you're getting at. People love tragedies, especially when the tragic character is cute. Maybe it's just woobies in general.

Is that what Your Lie in April ends up being about? Eesh, thanks for letting me know so I can skip it. The animation was so beautiful that I almost wanted to watch it despite finding slice of life boring most of the time.
