Why is it...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That people used to be paranoid about online safety, and now they post things publicly and can't believe when that doesn't end well?

Gravitating to a "It will never happen to me!" mindset probably.

People probably don't think it will happen to them. I mean, yeah, it happens occasionally, but everyone I know posts everything online and nothing's happened to THEM, so it won't happen to me, either? What's the likelihood?

But of course, it can.

And I think some people just don't think they're interesting enough to have a lot of people care about them. So it doesn't matter what they post, they're just one of the nameless masses... until someone notices them.

An illusion of privacy? I mean, I've seen quite a lot of people got fucked over by twitter.

Because everybody else is doing it.

I don't know. I feel like I'm one of the few in my generation (20s) that still thinks about what I post on the internet and am super careful about giving out my real name and where I live.

I know how fast things can go viral and I just try to keep my exposure to a minimum

I had the weird thought just yesterday that we're the last generation in the (developed?) world who will have been 'before' social media, and before cameras were everywhere. Most people born now will see always being connected and the potential to always be recorded in public as normal. (Granted, that won't stop them doing or posting stupid things, but.)

And we're also the ones who chose what to post. Kids now have their parents sharing everything before it's even a choice for them.

At least my awkward teen years are not preserved on the internet for all to see.

Because major websites adapted that way. Ten years ago we weren't supposed to put anything personal online, because bad people would stalk us and murder us. Everyone used usernames, your real name was really only for a professional e-mail. Maybe Facebook really was what changed things, where suddenly you were required to use your real info. And in a circle of just your classmates, it's no big deal, but it kept expanding. And other websites followed suit. Ugh, when Youtube started requiring names, too... (I actually never changed it out of protest, so I can't comment on anything anymore, which is probably good for me anyway)

Anyway, false usernames have gone out of style. More and more people use the internet, too.

YouTube requiring names really bothered me. I use my fake email address. Blogger also does now. I kind of understand YT's rationale since people were going OTT with mean comments, but then people just use them under their real names. Or use fake emails like I do.

I think using real names can cut down on peope being awful to some extent.

Facebook is evil, though.

It's funny, it almost seems like it was designed for university stalkers?

I literally have a made-up name that I use for Google+ and YouTube. What, no, Googles, I totally live in a different time zone than you would derive from my computer's clock settings and whatever ISP metadata you're using to figure me out!

(Maybe I shouldn't be using Google Chrome to post this.)

I'm wondering now what would happen if you made an account under a name like Tim R. Mortiss or Valancy Stirling?

The nice thing about Chrome is that you can add free extensions to mitigate this somewhat. I use AdBlock and Disconnect and find that they work wonders, but here's a link for those and others, if you want to combine to reinforce your efforts at privacy: http://lifehacker.com/the-best-browser-extensions-that-protect-your-privacy-479408034

I think folks realized that security is largely an illusion anyway.

Not necessarily. I mean... I have no idea what Case's real name is, where he lives, or anything else. If I were on Facebook, I could see that Case Fandomsecrets lives in Newpost and words at DreamWidth. There is a huge difference. For all I know, Case is my next door neighbor.

Or am I wrong?

People have gotten used to the internet and trust it more I guess. I use a user name but have just posted my first name because it's a really common name and there's probably a hundred people with that name. *shrug*

But I still believe that posting your specific location on a blog or something is really careless thing to do.

Re: Why is it...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-26 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's also partially due to the fact that originally, the Internet was a new and scary thing, so people were more careful because it was new.

Now we have kids who have never known a world without widespread Internet. It's always been a part of their lives. So why wouldn't they share everything, because that's what everybody else does? I still get astonished looks when I say I don't have a Facebook (I don't). But I didn't get access to the Internet until I was in college, and that was the late '90's. As others have said, my awkward teenage fanfic will remain in notebooks, not displayed online, and I'm really grateful for that.
