Or they think they care about ableism but handle it in the... worst ways possible. Though this is more a facebook thing than a fandom thing.

Like the Facebook memes that say "children with autism are precious delicate flowers." And then you see people with autism in the comments saying "seriously, just talk about us like we're people" and everyone tells them their opinions don't matter. WTF?

Yeah, I don't like that either and it definitely comes up more with disability than other things.

Yeah, the coddling, infantilizing, and downright fetishing of people with mental illness in general is scary to behold. You have to not just suffer in a way they see fit, but suffer dramatically "HOLEEEE SHEEEEIT YOU DID NOT FUCKING POST A TRIGGER WARNING NOW I'VE MURDERED MY CAT IN A TRAUMA RELATED FIT" for them, and be grateful when they white knight on your behalf. God help you if you are not thankfully and grateful in profusion for the white-knighting. And you must never, ever, ever attempt to get better.

White-knighters are the future social workers we're going to have to deal with. If that thought doesn't absolutely TERRIFY every actual PWD, you're not paying attention.

I have spent so much time educating my support workers. I dread when each one moves on, and I get a new one because I know I'm going to have to knock all the white-knighting college shit out of them and get them to deal with reality. I like the good ideas in principle, but gods damn does no one teach that sometimes you have to deal with the world you live in and not the one you want to live in?

Social worker here who is perfectly capable of treating PWD as regular human beings and listening to what they have to say, thanks. Partly because I'm a parent of a PWaD myself. Try not to tar an entire profession with the same brush, thanks.
