Re: Would you/have you named someone after a work of fiction?

So long as the name sounds pretty normal (Eowyn, yes, even Bella or a variation), etc, sure. But ones that are so obvious, like Sherlock, some of teh Disney names, that's skirting into the area that your kid will get bullied. Pets? Go hog wild, it's fun.

Yeah, but "your kid will get bullied" is just such a terrible excuse, because kids will pick anything to bully other kids about.

Why not give them a neat name? At least it'll give them a sense of identity when they're not the seventh Aiden/Brayden/Jayden/Logan etc in their class.

I agree. I know from experience that when it comes to bullying, if it's not one thing it's another. I was bullied for many different reasons as a kid.

Yeah, but the name is gonna be front and center and it's something that IS their identity and WHY would you even do that?

It is a good excuse to not do that.

For real. I was unfortunate enough to get stuck with an incredibly common name and I hate it. It's no fun when there are five other people in your class with the same name as you.

I changed my name (well, not legally, but in terms of what I go by) to something a lot less common and I'm much happier now.

I've worked in elementary schools for almost 20 years. I've yet to see someone bullied (or even made fun of) because of their name. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just don't think it's that common these days.

Of course, I wasn't at the same school as a former co-worker of mine who named her first son Letcher (for those who don't know the word lecher (pronounced the same) means a dirty old man). She wouldn't change it even after someone told her what it meant. The best part is why they chose this name/spelling. She and her hubby LOVED the name Fletcher, but, well, they wanted an L name because her name started with an L. These parents were in their mid to late 20s when the kid was born. (His middle names aren't much better). I guess the only good thing is that a lot of folks don't know the word "lecher" these days....
