It's because patriarchy. Trans women get more attention because the idea of "a man wanting to be a woman" is deeply threatening to the whole idea that men are inherently superior. Trans men get shrugged off because the idea of "a woman wanting to be a man" is seen as more natural, because of course, why wouldn't they? Men are inherently superior, don't you know.
It's the same reason tomboys are acceptable, but girly boys aren't (and there isn't even a neutral term that's the equivalent of "tomboy", just insults like "sissy").

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 03:35 am (UTC)(link)My Example: A transman worked with the shipping division of my company for a while. There was the usual titter about "is he a boy or a girl?" and "Tee hee hee, he's different!" but the guys in shipping either didn't notice or didn't mind. He got along well with everyone. I don't know if the same would happen were a transwoman to work with us but I would hope there would be the same tolerance if not outright acceptance.

(Use a space in the term, btw. Trans is an adjective here, not a prefix. It's like how you wouldn't say "blackwoman" or "gayman", you'd say "black woman" or "gay man".)
I don't know any studies offhand that do systemic comparison of how accepted trans women vs. trans men feel in daily life. I do know, and the data for this is easy to google, that trans women get murdered at a far higher rate. (Especially trans women of color, so there's an extra "dehumanization of non-white people" element thrown in.) That's an extra strain of hatred for women that comes from patriarchy, misogyny, and, like the other anon pointed out, homophobia -- which is also interlinked with the idea that your life must support a certain hierarchy of gender roles, or else you are A Threat.
