Right conclusion, wrong data.

It's because patriarchy. Trans women get more attention because the idea of "a man wanting to be a woman" is deeply threatening to the whole idea that men are inherently superior. Trans men get shrugged off because the idea of "a woman wanting to be a man" is seen as more natural, because of course, why wouldn't they? Men are inherently superior, don't you know.

It's the same reason tomboys are acceptable, but girly boys aren't (and there isn't even a neutral term that's the equivalent of "tomboy", just insults like "sissy").

Indeed. Since we're in the threat, I'll recommend the book "Whipping Girl" by Julia Serano, and it's pretty much all on that topic (which she calls "femmephobia").

Seconding the rec for this book. Even if you're not trans, there's a LOT of good stuff in there related to society and women.

There's probably also that whole gay panic thing that a dude might hit on a lady only OMG TEH EVIL TRANS SUPERPOWARS GAYED THEM OUT. Since again, gay is seen as less masculine so someone being able to 'trick' you into a gay encounter takes away manpoints or something.

Are you sure? I think people are more comfortable with transwomen than transmen if only because they've seen more of them. Yes, it's more "shocking" to see a woman who was born physically male, probably because our standards for women mean it's harder for transwomen to pass as ciswomen, but I also think men are more accepting of transmen than of transwomen.

My Example: A transman worked with the shipping division of my company for a while. There was the usual titter about "is he a boy or a girl?" and "Tee hee hee, he's different!" but the guys in shipping either didn't notice or didn't mind. He got along well with everyone. I don't know if the same would happen were a transwoman to work with us but I would hope there would be the same tolerance if not outright acceptance.

I'm confused. You say you think people are more comfortable with trans women, then the rest of the comment sounds like you're agreeing with me, that trans men do generally have an easier time with acceptance than trans women.

(Use a space in the term, btw. Trans is an adjective here, not a prefix. It's like how you wouldn't say "blackwoman" or "gayman", you'd say "black woman" or "gay man".)

I don't know any studies offhand that do systemic comparison of how accepted trans women vs. trans men feel in daily life. I do know, and the data for this is easy to google, that trans women get murdered at a far higher rate. (Especially trans women of color, so there's an extra "dehumanization of non-white people" element thrown in.) That's an extra strain of hatred for women that comes from patriarchy, misogyny, and, like the other anon pointed out, homophobia -- which is also interlinked with the idea that your life must support a certain hierarchy of gender roles, or else you are A Threat.

Yeah, and I'd also suggest that it's because transmen are often (wrongly!) misgendered and misunderstood as butch lesbians. Our media has never been too keen on presenting lesbians that aren't traditionally feminine to some degree (likely to prevent them from being too threatening, and also probably some skeevy male gaze stuff, because of course those women's sexuality must also somehow involve a man). So given that conflation and the general invisibility of trans people, I think this plays a role, too.

I think there's a strong argument to be made that our culture tends to emphasize more strongly those people who are conventionally attractive in general, and to be much more willing to tell their stories. I don't think this effect is limited to lesbians & I'd honestly question how much of it comes from the male gaze as such. It certainly has a broadly patriarchal dimension & certainly effects women more than men but I don't think that's the same thing.
