Yeah, and I'd also suggest that it's because transmen are often (wrongly!) misgendered and misunderstood as butch lesbians. Our media has never been too keen on presenting lesbians that aren't traditionally feminine to some degree (likely to prevent them from being too threatening, and also probably some skeevy male gaze stuff, because of course those women's sexuality must also somehow involve a man). So given that conflation and the general invisibility of trans people, I think this plays a role, too.

I think there's a strong argument to be made that our culture tends to emphasize more strongly those people who are conventionally attractive in general, and to be much more willing to tell their stories. I don't think this effect is limited to lesbians & I'd honestly question how much of it comes from the male gaze as such. It certainly has a broadly patriarchal dimension & certainly effects women more than men but I don't think that's the same thing.
