I used to like him too, but he's gotten so smug and arrogant over the years, especially to do with the fact he's smart and witty. He seems to think because he knows/gets something, everyone does/should do. It's very much like my brother and it's hard enough to tolerate it in him, when I can see when he's doing it just to wind us up, and because there are times when it's hard for him to come down to other peoples levels when they don't know the same about computers etc as he does. But Stephen Fry doesn't seem to have any of that sympathetic bits to him, and he's just plain arrogant about it all. Having read his first autobiography just makes it worse, especially when he goes on about how clever he was at school and how his head teacher hated him for being so smart and smug even at aged 10 or whatever.

Add that to his obvious discomfort with anything vaguely female and the female body related (see episodes of QI featuring Emma Thompson and her tales of flashing her breasts at him, and any with Jo Brand and her willingness to make jokes around periods and other women's issues) just makes him oddly unbearable.

I think I feel more affection for him based on his early work than some people. A friend of mine wrote him a fan letter back when we were teenagers, and he wrote the most lovely reply to her. So I suppose I see a sympathetic part to him. Also I see value in the work he does against mental illness stigma.

But I've lost a lot of enjoyment in him over the years. I think some of it's that he used to be part of the young, "alternative" kind of comedy, and now he's this esteemed figure who people are inclined to overrate and idolize. I suppose that's what OP meant about being part of the establishment. I'll certainly feel like banging my head against the wall if he ever gets a knighthood.

Nothing odd about it, if you ask me. He's just plain unbearable.

*boggles* Seriously? It's an act, folks. He's pretending to be super uncomfortable because it's being played for laughs and here's the point people are missing: HE is the one being laughed at, because of his shyness, which is almost certainly a huge put on.

I also hate to spoil it for you, but Alan Davies isn't as much of an idiot as he pretends to be on QI, Jo Brand doesn't really eat as much as she claims to and Phil Jupitus isn't seriously propositioning Fry when he makes jokey flirtatious comments. It's a television show, everyone's putting on a certain persona because that's what their job is and oh my GOD I can't believe I have to tell someone this...
