nayrt - Harry's a dude's dude and a bit of a lonely horndog for a lot of the series, and there's a lot of male gaze since the books are from his point of view. He's also not the world's most enlightened thinker when it comes to feminism so sometimes his descriptions are a touch condescending. But honestly, I don't think it's anywhere near as "anti-woman" as some people make it out to be.

It's actually lampshaded in every book that Harry thinks like this, knows he thinks like this, and knows it's wrong. So the anon who "literally feels sick" (no you don't) obviously didn't pay much attention to what they did read.

Disclaimer: I'm not actually a fan of the series, as the books became way too samey samey, way too fast, for my liking. Would have been good as a one-off, or at most, a trilogy, IMO.

And even if I am missing something, am I missing the parts of the book where his treatment for women is treat like a minor character flaw (at best) that should be considered to be just part of his awesome manly awesomeness?

Eh? The only relationship in the books that had that vibe was Harry/Susan in the early books, back when we were still mostly in Noir territory, and 'Grave Peril' slapped Harry in the face for that hard. After that, every time he's veered towards thinking that way, either the woman or the circumstances slap him around the head for it again. Karrin never put up with it (though I don't like his relationship with her either, really), Elaine was openly acknowledged as a childhood crush that ended spectacularly badly for mostly external reasons (Justin will do that to a relationship), and every other woman he's come across is usually unavailable, more powerful, evil, or just unsuitable, and usually for external reasons rather than them 'not knowing what's good for them'. All of them had reasons in the text, and were borne out in them (Karrin, Luccio, Lash, etc). Most of the time these days Harry's the one pointing out that he's the opposite of what's good for them. Which is legitimate, not his self-esteem problems talking. He actually is the opposite of good for people most of the time.

I admit, I LOLed a bit at the "makes me literally feel sick". If the Dresden Files is bad enough to make a person OMG LITERALLY sick, then just being out and about in the real world must put them into a coma.

Do you mean the attacking, insulting, belittling and intentional antagonisation for the 'feminist' character (and her writing in the first place shows it's not Harry who has the problem with women but butcher) If that's what you mean, I would say "not the world's most enlightened thinker" is a massive understatement.

If I remember correctly there are several female characters who basically run circles around Harry in more than one regard. So the fact that Harry comes across a sad and narrow minded guy, doesn't necessarily reflect much on Butcher. It has more to do with the lone ranger & noir snarky type Harry identify as.

Er, do you mean the character who is a mere mortal with NO powers whatsoever but upon whom Harry still relies for back up because he knows she'll come through for him? I'm not excusing Harry for his somewhat cringeworthy attitude about Murphy's cuteness or overall attractiveness, but if the character truly felt she was that worthless, he wouldn't call on her so often or place his trust completely in her even though--again--- he is one of the world's most powerful wizards and she is "only" a really good feminist cop with no powers at all.

I don't know, I'm really not sensitive about portrayal of women. I don't think I've ever been offended by sexist media, but I put the first book down after 150 pages because I was so sick of the sexist drivel.
