WOO HOO DRESDEN FILES

but really, good Harry/John fics are a relic of the past now. authors have left the fandom. I'd beg too if I knew you were brilliant.

+1

I think the last good Dresden Files fic I read was written in 2012. :-(

Yeah, it's one of the few ships that I can't really see no matter how much I squint.

huh, I don't go looking for fanworks but I never thought that would be that popular...

Mabye Harry/Michael.

Shipping Harry and Marcone is a bit like shipping Spider-man and the Kingpin of Crime... no it's exactly like shipping Spider-man and Fisk... *wonders now, how popular that is.*

Kingpin/Daredevil fics start on April 10, 2015

I ship Harry/Michael, but it's really rare. In all my looking, I've only ever found three fics, all by the same author (the Five Crosses series by jedibuttercup, if anyone was wondering).

This is Marcone's introduction in the books:
"A voice came from inside the car. "Mister Hendricks, please. Be more polite. Mister Dresden, would you join me for a moment? I'd hoped to give you a lift back to your office, but your abrupt exit made it somewhat problematic. Perhaps you will allow me to convey you the rest of the way."

I leaned down to look into the backseat. A man of handsome and unassuming features, dressed in a casual sports jacket and Levi's, regarded me with a smile.

"And you would be?" I asked him.

His smile widened, and I swear it made his eyes twinkle. "My name is John Marcone. I would like to discuss business with you."

I stared at him for a moment. And then my eyes slid aside to the very large and very over-developed Mister Hendricks. The man growled under his breath, and it sounded like Cujo just before he jumped at the woman in the car. I didn't feel like duking it out with Cujo and his two buddies.

So I got into the back of the Caddy with Gentleman Johnny Marcone. It was turning out to be a very busy day. And I was still late for my appointment.

(...)
Gentleman Johnny Marcone didn't look like the sort of man who would have my legs broken or my jaw wired shut. His salt-and-pepper hair was cut short, and there were lines from sun and smiling etched into the corners of his eyes. His eyes were the green of well-worn dollar bills. He seemed more like a college football coach: good-looking, tanned, athletic, and enthusiastic. "

In my book, that's a pretty good reason for the ship right there. Dresden just uses his eyes that well.

Ooh, Dresden!

And no, that is so not a thing. Harry is as straight as straight can be. I understand wanting more fic for your OTP, but it's not cool for your friend to keep bugging you to write for a pair you don't even see, regardless of how popular it might be in fandom.

Text: I'M SORRY
I know that Dresden/Marcone is your OTP of all OTPs. (You've told me this quite a few times.) But I just don't see it.

(This is one of the very few times I'm ever gonna say this, but Harry is one of the characters that I just can't see being attracted to men. The whole 1st Person narrator thing makes it really hard to handwave him as a closeted bisexual.)

Plus I don't actually like Marcone all that much. He's an interesting character, but I don't root for him, I don't want him to win, and I don't see him with Harry.

If it was some rarepair that nobody else was writing, maybe it'd be different, and I'd work harder to find a story I could write about them, but they are the JUGGERNAUT FREAKING PAIRING in this fandom. So

PLEASE STOP ASKING!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, Dresden Files secret!

Yeah, I understand how you might not be able to see that particular pairing. I only recently read through the series and while I can theoretically see Harry as being a deeply closeted bi and maaaaaybe a tiny bit attracted to Marcone, I really can't see them as going anywhere. Not even one-night-stand anywhere. Harry is much more attracted to women, and just too much against what Marcone stands for. And on the other side Marcone just doesn't seem that into Harry, esp. once he figures out that Harry isn't someone that he can use. There were a few moments here and there where I could see where the shippers might be coming from (the moment in White Night when Harry asks Marcone to help him save the human servants, for example) but unless there is some serious meaningful interaction between the characters in the upcoming books I'd say that this ship is skating on some pretty damn thin ice.

Sorry for the wall of text, I JUST HAVE DRESDEN FILES FEELINGS OK.

SA - While I'm thinking about it, I wanted to ask if anyone knows a good place to discuss this series? I marathon-read the entire series and just finished Skin Game last week and I don't know where if there are any good discussion boards or communities for these books.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see it either, but even the strong likelihood of canonical heterosexuality has never discouraged slashers, just like personal affinity or lack thereof has never affected shippers in general.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I always think it's sort of different when it comes to a 1st-person narrator though.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

It all depends on how reliable and how self-aware you consider each particular narrator to be. And personally, I think Harry's got enough issues regarding sex that I have no problem imagining him as bi-but-in-denial-about-it.

I don't think it'd make a huge difference, tbh. Ships happen between people who HATE one another in canon, people who are married to other people, people who aren't technically the same species, so... first person POV is not a big obstacle.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I cannot stand these books. the anti-woman writing makes me literally feel sick.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Explain. I don't see it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Harry's a dude's dude and a bit of a lonely horndog for a lot of the series, and there's a lot of male gaze since the books are from his point of view. He's also not the world's most enlightened thinker when it comes to feminism so sometimes his descriptions are a touch condescending. But honestly, I don't think it's anywhere near as "anti-woman" as some people make it out to be.

Hey, no person who claims to be your friend should keep pestering and all out harrassing you for fiction of any sort if you've expressed that you either don't like the idea/pairing, can't see the idea/pairing just plain aren't interested in writing it. Because that's not what friends do. They respect each other. You are respecting that his person likes said pairing and they should respect you don't and don't have to write anything if you don't want to. End of discussion. Where is Boggle when you need him? (having been on the same end as you are OP, my usual response is to hand them a metaphorical pen and go "write it yourself.")

As for Harry/John... err, no. I can't see it either. Harry doesn't talk about John in the same sexualized manner he talks about women. Hell, he talks about Thomas in a more sexualized manner than he does Marcone. For me, the Harry/Karen ship has sailed due to lack of action and Molly is still far too young. So I'm going to sit here in my corner and hope my friend has some time to write more Nimue/Harry crackship and eat my popcorn. (And yes, I know, Nimue isn't in the books, but Merlin is mentioned. She's got to be around, somewhere.)

I shipped Harry/Marcone for a good long while. Specificially, between 'Death Masks' and 'Small Favors'. Those six books or so are great for the ship, between the business with the Shroud in Masks, the kidnapping/rescue in Favours, and the events in the Deeps in 'White Night'. I could see Harry as potentially bi despite the 1st person narrative mostly because Harry's personal denial skills are phenomenal and he always was quite focused on Marcone's physical presence. There was a low-grade ebb and flow of trust-vs-lethality to the pairing that I really, really liked.

These last few books, though, I'm seeing it less and less. Mostly, I think, because I'm not shipping Harry with anyone anymore. Between the Mantle and the Red Court and everything else, his will and sense of self and ability to consent or even process his own desires properly has been eroded from so many goddamn directions that I don't want him with anyone until he's had about half a century's worth of therapy and some completely new living conditions. Alternately, a whole new life built from scratch. That could work too. He's not exactly healthy for the other party in any potential pairing at the minute either. It just ... the series has taken an express train straight to Depressionville lately.

About the only person I think I could still ship Harry with at this stage is Sanya. Possibly Bob. Both of those have the background/personality/grounding to be able to make a semi-successful go at it. Sanya has that promise he made to Harry about the Mantle, too (yes, I find that kind of thing romantic sometimes, depends on the context, I have a big thing for both tragedy and 'comrade-in-arms' ships). Even those are pushing it a lot, though.

(For the record, never liked Harry/Karrin as a pairing, and still don't, no matter how canon it becomes. I love them as friends, but romance ... not so much).

So, I can understand not wanting to write Harry/Marcone. I'd have trouble myself these days, unless I went with an AU springing off from an earlier point in canon ('Small Favor', again, probably the best place). Post 'Skin Game' in particular the pairing just doesn't have the right vibes for me anymore. There's a whole chasm there now that I don't think can be fixed. I think a lot of people probably feel the same. The whole fandom seems to have slowed down, and Harry/Marcone right along with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's rude to keep bugging someone repeatedly about writing anything. If you haven't already made that clear to your friend, it's time to be polite but firm: "I know it's your OTP, but it's not a pairing I'm interested in writing. Since it's a popular ship, there are plenty of fics for you to enjoy, but I'm going to need you to stop asking me about this, please."

Any repeated pestering gets met with: "We talked about this, remember? I'm not interested in writing this pairing. If that ever chances I will let you know, but it's really frustrating that you won't take no for an answer."

Personally, I'm convinced Marcone and Murphy have been having great hate/you've-got-my-back sex after the end of Changes. In his own way, he'd be just as reliable as Harry.

Slashers are silly.

The benign ones at least. ;) (Fun usually is.)
