I want to get less rusty and try some ship prompts.

Same, sort of. I mostly just want to get back into writing but it's been pretty hard.

I once gave myself a challenge where I would pick a couple names at random and then try to figure out how I could make the pairing seem plausible.

I'm just refusing to worry about any of mine except for one that I'm editing and one that I'm about to start writing. The rest can wait.

Can you pick out one of yours that you're the most excited about and focus on that for a while?

I just started proofreading for a VERY new writer, with the intent of working on his spelling and grammar before I get into anything more difficult or contextual. But I can't help but notice that almost every sentence he writes consists of two to four independent clauses. Does anyone have advice for how to help him vary his style?

Re: Writing Thread

I keep running into advice that says you must know your ending before you start writing, even if it's just a vague idea.

I actually keep the ending a complete mystery when I start. I like figuring it out as I write and I see all the little changes to my original planning that add up and lead the story in a direction I wasn't expecting. I'm usually really happy with how well it all comes together.

Do you outline your ending before you start writing?

Re: Writing Thread

I never actually get myself to outline an ending if I don't know it when I begin. I usually wait until it comes to me, especially since sometimes endings can change based on how your characters end up evolving while you're writing. I find it does help if you have a rough idea of an ending though, since it can help guide you on what happens next in the story. I sometimes do get stumped on writing the next scene if I don't have an ending in mind.

Re: Writing Thread

I do. It helps me immensely to know where I'm going so I don't go off on tangents and so I can foreshadow the ending appropriately. I mean, that still leaves a lot of room to make changes. As I go along, I do reevaluate what is or isn't needed but I definitely try to nail down an ending early on so I know exactly what kind of story I'm trying to tell and so I can actually finish the story because I could just keep going forever if I didn't tighten up everything.

But, then, I do tend to write very long stories so it's easy to get lost amid the details for me. Outlining really helped me start finishing the stories I was writing.

I usually have several vague scenarios for how my story may end when I start out, but nothing really plotted out (I don't really plot out anything beforehand though)

However the story often turns in a completely different direction, and the ending ends up being something I didn't think about at all before starting.

I'm writing a WIP and posting on AO3 to feel out the fandom. While I enjoy the story, the feedback it's gotten annoys me. As of now, a few chapters in, it has 120 kudos and 4 comments. 3 comments are asking for updates, and 1 asks a question that I answered in the author's note.

I'm giving it one more chapter before I pretty much say "fuck this fandom" and move on.

I love the idea of bingo cards, but I always get stuck when I find that I don't like a couple of my squares, or they don't inspire me to write anything interesting. So I decided to grab prompts from my favourite bingo community and generate a bingo card for myself that I actually like by deleting prompts I don't like, and pressing the 'generate card' button until I get one I'm in love with. It's working great, and I think I'm beginning to get over my latest depressive funk so it feels good to write again :)

Here's the bingo card generator I'm talking about, btw. This has got to be my favourite writing tool ever.

I decided to add a character page to my writing tumblr today, which has really inspired me!

I've written several (400 character max) character bios and, as I "needed" pictures for that page, I searched around for models who sort of fitted the way I imagine my characters (as I can't draw). Finding Ilona Kuodiene, who really fits how I imagine one of my characters to look, inspired me to start a first meeting one-shot between that character and her lover, which happens before the main story.

I'm really just in a writing mood, which I feel like I haven't been in ages! So excited!

I want to write original fiction but I don't even know where to start, tbh. I've been writing fic for so long (and I have so many fics I want to finish/write). I'm not very good with "original" ideas, and even the ones I do have I don't know what to do with.

Re: Writing Thread

After a bit of a slump not knowing what to write next, I'm super happy that I wrote a little thing. It's not necessarily a story -- more of a character piece that tells the main story from one character's perspective -- but after having nothing, I'm happy with it. It was one of those tiny pairings that I wanted to explore but had no stories for. I'd like to write one more fic for this pairing that's actually more of a story.

Now, I'm reviewing the canon for a different fandom and that's getting me interested in writing it. Of course, I've got all these grand huge ideas so I'm going to have corral them into something more manageable but I think looking at something different is good for me.

I've been writing a lot of practice things about settings recently. Its really fun and gives me practice with describing things.

world-building is frustrating. figuring out what kind of technology level my vaguely-realized world should have is frustrating. coming up with a plot is frustrating.

i have lots of little ideas i love to death and characters i'm really enjoying fleshing out but god dammit this is hard.

Y'all, I should be writing on a WIP. So I'm going to toss out fandoms and relevant characters for all the stuff I'm working on, tell me what to focus on, and I'll be back in 2.5 hours with a progress update.

Harry Potter: Weasley-centric, a challenge to the OBHWF concept

Once Upon a Time: Future fic involved Henry and "uncle" Neal

Teen Wolf: Centers mostly around Peter and Malia

Castle: There are four stories on my plate: One has supernatural (not the series) elements, one has science fiction elements, one is m/m with an mmf threesome, and one is canon m/f.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I'd like to ask that nobody come in to discourage people please. This is meant to be a space where writers can safely talk about their ideas without someone coming in to shoot down ideas or writing.

tl;dr: Please don't be an ass, thank you.

I'm not progressing, I'm regressing. I have a few WIPs and an idea for a new fic but I'm not feeling it for some reason, so I'm taking a break.

Currently writing a war update for my alternate-history/story. The thing is: I have absolutely no idea how to write wars.

And it doesn't help that said update is chronological and based on a real-life war (the Russo-Turkish War of 1877) and if there's one thing I know about Balkan politics at the time, it's that EVERYTHING IS SUPREMELY COMPLICATED.

Wrote one porny thing today that I was really happy with. It was for the Legend of the Seeker landcom community. Given the prompt I was given, I couldn't not go porny.

Not sure what I'm going to work on next. I'm tempted to write a Steve/Bucky/Peggy fic, but I'm not sure I can get the setting right. I've written Steve/Bucky before, but present day.
