Media You Love But...

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-04-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
What is some book/show/movie/game you LOVE but could only bear to experience once?

Requiem for a Dream is a movie I love. I even own it on DVD. However, I've only been able to watch it all the way through ONCE because it destroyed me emotionally. I cried so hard during my first watch that I almost woke up my dad because I could not stop (I was probably too young to watch it). I've watched scenes here or there since then. But, I can't work myself up to watching the whole thing again.

Ace in the Hole. It's an incredibly cynical movie about the media exploiting tragedy and I think it's really good, but even though I don't often mind cynicism there's just something about this one that makes me squirm when I think about watching it again.

That actually looks like an interesting movie. But I am unsure how I respond to 'cynicism' to be honest. I guess it won't hurt to try and watch once! Just have to try and find it online.

Oddly, A Wrinkle in Time. I tried picking it up again a couple years ago, but it simply was not as magical as when I read it the first time, in middle school.

I've been that way with several books. Usually childhood favorites. Sometimes your memory of a book is better than the actual book.

Except Bunnicula. Bunnicula still rocks.

Schindler's List. It's a good movie but damn I could only sit through it once, I find it way too upsetting to watch again.

Serenity, which is no where near on the same upsetting scale as Schindler's List but Wash's death still haunts me to this day so I find it really hard to watch again.

I love Schindler's List. Though the first time I watched it I cried twice. I've actually seen it multiple times now.

i've watched Schindler's List twice. But yes, I need to be in a really right frame of mind.

Why were you not able to watch them again?

Oh, man. Those are the ones I've watched repeatedly.

Blindness. The twist that leads into a post apocalypse setting is great and Mark Ruffalo is the cherry on top.

... not so much that it covers up a dark, grim chunk in the movie where a gang takes over the main characters' isolation ward and turns it into a hellhole where the only way for people not from the gang to get food/supplies is to surrender their women to be used as sex slaves, which causes the death of one and is really disturbing.

Is that based on the book? I liked the premise of the book and I love Mark Ruffalo.

I haven't seen the movie but I read the book and it was definitely a little hard to get through at times. I still want to read the sequel/companion/whatever though.

Titanic. I loved that movie. It was brilliant on the big screen. But then I got in on VHS (that's how long ago it was) and it wasn't the same at all.

I couldn't get through it again because it was so long! It is a great movie but I always want to skip through to the end when all the action happens.

Grave of the Fireflies.

I tried again and couldn't get past the first ten minutes because I started crying too much.

I'm seconding Requiem for a Dream too. The scenes with the guy's mom are just too difficult for me. I'm getting teary just thinking about these films fuck.

The mom is part that gets me! Holy shit. The end scene with her losing it just kills me.

Homestuck, mostly because it's so friggin' LONG. After it's over I might re-read small chunks of it every once in a while, but I don't think I'll ever re-read it from start to finish.

Anachronox was only half a game. It was a lovely game, but it was only half, and it will never be finished because Ion Storm Dallas was shuttered following Daikatana's colossal failure.

And that makes me sadder than anything.

I've walked out of so many theaters thinking, "Oh wow, what a brilliant, moving, wonderfully-crafted film. So much to think and talk about! And now I'm content to never see it again for as long as I live!"

Nightcrawler and Gone Girl are recent examples.

Dark Knight. I've seen it maybe 3-4 times. I have to be in the exact right mood to watch it. I can watch the other two Nolan Batman movies just fine, but DK is just so overpoweringly depressing. I once tried to watch it when I wasn't in the right frame, and I couldn't make it through and was completely miserable for days after.

Usually for me LOVE means I have to be able to watch it again, so this is a difficult question.

Any movie where a pet dies will often go on my list of "never watching again" even if it's a good movie. I can handle animal death to a point but if a dog or a cat dies, I'm out.

The most recent example I can think of is I am Legend (I didn't omg love the movie it's just what comes to mine) which normally would be a movie I could be fine with watching again, but the fucking scene where the dog dies just haunts me.

Right now, Dragon Age Inquisition. I loved the game, for the most part, I just...can't quite get up the energy to deal with all the grinding between story missions again.
