17: Hi, you've got it completely wrong. Not many writers live on $100,000 or more a year (matter of fact, most of them don't) and they're fighting to be fairly compensated for something they helped create. The studios thought videotapes couldn't bring profit back in 1988, when the WGA struck for I think 18 weeks, and look how wrong they were. The Internet is not going away, and writers deserve a slice of that very lucrative pie. I've walked the line with writers; they don't want more than they're entitled to, they just haven't gotten it yet. Yes, other people are suffering too, like the stage crews and whatnot. But do you think the writers WANT to strike? NO. They want to work, do their job, and earn money.

Also: FANS SUPPORT ICON. Suck on it.

God I hate these 'I lose all respect' secrets. Get your head out of your ass.

32: ...are you serious? Six reminds me of a scary clown, Four always seems to look like Mick Jagger to me, and though Five does have nice hair, they just don't even compare...IMHO of course. ;)

44: Are you my friend Heather? She loves Five so much (but, interestingly enough, HATED Time Crash, and I thought she would love it).

Re: 17

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
HI I LOVE YOU.

(Also: A lot of the fans-support-writers movements and a lot of us with these icons (*uses own*) are raising money for and contributing money to funds to help out the below-the-line workers. Like, hey, stage crews and techs and the people who get paid shit for difficult jobs. So secret-poster please get your damn facts straight.)

Re: 17

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
MUCH LOVE for the support icons. Yes, I KNOW Doctor Who's a British show and therefore its writers can't be WGA members, but I have a good feeling they support them. You know, brotherhood and all.

I've contributed time--and will contribute money once I get my first paycheck--to help below-the-line folks as well.

Here's a picture of me on the line outside Turner Broadcasting here in Atlanta. (http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v172/111/37/1113990202/n1113990202_30219298_6964.jpg) :)

And I agree, the OP does need a little fact-checkin'.

Re: 17

(Anonymous) 2008-01-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the OP was pointing out that there are a huge number of people who aren't writers who are suffering--stylists, CREW MEMBERS, everyone.

It's like baseball, a little bit. How much is enough? Yeah, they're writers. A lot of other people could probably use more money. So what? How much do they deserve? In my opinion, the crew members do deserve more. But yet...they aren't in movies. On the stage, yeah. Why does no one care about THAT?

Re: 17

(Anonymous) 2008-01-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Then maybe the stage crew should, oh...I don't know....STRIKE FOR MORE MONEY until they get what they feel they deserve?!

Re: 17

(Anonymous) 2008-01-14 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Good idea. They should picket the WGA headquarters.

Re: 17

(Anonymous) 2008-01-13 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't just about "more" money. It's about not getting any from internet-based entertainment. They're not getting money for what they created.

And it would be "like baseball?" Um, no. Writers are hardly the ones getting all the dough. If it was the actors striking, it'd be "like baseball," maybe.

Re: 17

[identity profile] boombangbing.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, you just said that way better I could have. *thumbs up*

Re: 17

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. (I don't have one of those icons, but people who diss the strike and call the writers greedy make me want to get one.)

Re: 17

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
They're from lexigeek.com if you'd like one, or a lot of them. :)

Re: 17, 44

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
17. Thank you for saying this before me, and much more eloquently. Those statements piss me off more than they should.

44. *squees at Five lovers* > >

Re: 17, 44

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
17. You're welcome. I'm giving consideration to screenwriting as a career, and I've always been a union supporter, so I'm on the writers' side here. Writers are not evil, they just want to be paid fairly to do the job they love. And yes, other people are feeling the effects too, but what about us fans? My Name is Earl and 30 Rock, two of my favorite shows, just bowed for the season this week--or at least until production can resume. We're suffering too!

44. *points to her icon* Need I say more? (Time Crash is made of win.)

Re: 17, 44

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
17. Exactly. All they want is to be paid fairly - and, when the internet takes over, to be paid AT ALL. Heh, yes - isn't exactly fun for us either. ;p

44. XD Brilliant. (Yes, it is. It's just FUN.)

Re: 17, 32, 44

(Anonymous) 2008-01-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This strike is hurting FAR more than it's helping. Because the writers can't deal with what they have, other people are losing their jobs. So hooray, let's support the unemployment lines! Jesus.

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, of course they can't deal, as they're not getting what they rightly deserve from sales of DVD and Internet stuff, which is clearly where the industry is headed. They're seeing the potential for earnings way before the studios are, just like it was 19 years ago. Someone else said sarcastically that people should never ever go on strike regardless of how unfair/unsafe their working conditions might be just 'cause it'll hurt the economy. YES, the strike sucks. YES, people are losing their jobs. NO, it's not fun. NO, it's not what the writers want. Everyone just wants to be able to do their jobs and get paid fairly for it. But sometimes, unpleasant things have to happen for more pleasant things to come about. Jesus.

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
17. Word.

32. Aw. Wait, let me channel Six real quick:
Scary cl--?
Scary clown?

SCARY CLOWN?!?!?

Six is fantastic! I will agree that I find Ten more sexy just because...well, look at him! But I totally heart Six with his horrible fashion sense, his ridiculous ego, and his beligerent, blustery ways. He's wonderful.
I thought it was interesting that Davison was younger than Tennant when it started. He's, well, he's quite pretty, I think.

44. Aw. How could anyone hate Time Crash? Lovely geeky bit of fun.

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
17. Thank you. :)

32. I'm sorry! I'm just...I'm afraid of clowns and he sort of reminds me of one and...sorry! But yay for agreeing with me on Ten ;D

44. I know, right? She thought Ten's visible fanboying was "beyond obnoxious" and it literally turned her off from wanting to watch any NewWho. I told her he's not usually THAT visibly fanboying, that he can be totally srs biznas too, but she still doesn't seem interested. *sigh*

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
32. Well, he's got the hair and the coat and sort of the smile. But he's seriously great despite all that!

44. Ugh. I hate it when people pick bad, near-petty reasons to never ever watch a show. (One of my friends won't ever watch it because her ex-girlfriend liked it). Granted, Ten fanboys a lot, but it's something that works with the Doctor (any Doctor), I think. That whole "Ooh, lookit this shiny new thing, isn't it amazing!" attitude=priceless.

At any rate, the CiN things never seemed to be something you'd take too seriously (Doctor Who/Eastenders, anyone?), and the fanboying was more as a tribute than an actually...thingie.

I can't help but think that if you love one Doctor, by rights, you should love them all. They've all got their little quirks. Maybe show her "The Empty Child" instead? No fanboying, just good, old-fashioned awesome.

Hi, I love you.

They're doing it so I don't have to when I try to scrape together a living doing what they do.

Blame the studios who sued YouTube for their "fair share" and then claimed there wasn't enough to give to the writers because the internet "doesn't make a profit." They obviously don't give a fuck about anyone.

The strike might put me out of a job soon, but I'm still glad they're striking.

Re: 17

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you too. *hug*

The studios just watch out for themselves, not anyone else. I remember when Viacom sued Youtube--suddenly there were no Comedy Central clips or anything and it sucked, to put it not-so-eloquently.

So, you're a writer? How cool! :D

32

[identity profile] yaseanne.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to be very haughty, and then I saw your username. XD
And then I prepared to write a heart-felt argument that Four is at least as sexy as Ten (yeah, imagine my surprise when I realized that), and to defend Five's and Six's hotness. But really, the sexiest/best Doctor is always the one I'm watching right now.
So you only get the icon ;)

Re: 32

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-13 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't blame me, I'm just a raving Ten fan. (I oughta make an icon of that.) I mean, Four through Six are probably absolutely brilliant Doctors, but...they're just not personally attractive to me. I suppose they have their appeal. I'm just very passionate for an adorkable, suit-and-Chuck-wearin', London-accent-speakin' Doktah. ;)

May I ask exactly how much you've contributed to the MPTV Work Stoppafe Relief Fund, then?

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why that's your business, considering you're not even brave enough to log in. However, I am just a college student, so I don't exactly have tons of money for myself, let alone for donating to organizations or political campaigns.

Re: 17, 32, 44

[identity profile] orangewings.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I AGREE.

I just don't get it.
It's just showing that the Writers deserve more and spreading the word.
These 'Fans support the WGA' icons originated from fans4writers.com, where they seem to be VERY INFORMED about why the writers are striking and how this affects everyone. Why do you think not many people are complaining about The Daily Show, Colbert Report, etc coming back? Because they know that now the crew at least have their jobs back.

It's so simple. Is it wrong to support the writers? Most people are /very/ informed if they have the time to 1) Make their own icon with their own fandom and 2) Go to fans4writers.com where they have the whole history of how the strike started, starting right at the beginning from the strike in '88.
