Please don't let Hilary Clinton become a presidential challenger. She's controversial even on the left (which is why the stuff about her using a secret computer to conduct business has been leaked by the democrat party). Her running would probably be the easiest way to put a Tea Party president in the White House.

Who would you suggest instead? Don't say Liz Warren -- I like her but she's best placed in congress and doesn't want to run anyway.

(I'd rather not have Hilary either because fuck dynasties)

I don't know. That's the problem, it has seemed like the Clintons have had such a solid lock on Hilary being the candidate that the party has pretty much ignored any other potentials. Now this stuff about her computer has leaked I think it has nixxed her chance, but the Democrat Party is now running around like a headless chicken with no one who has name recognition to step into her place. This is why political coronations and dynasties are a bad idea, when something goes wrong, it leaves a huge gaping hole that no one dared plan for.

The computer stuff hasn't even come close to having nixxed her chance

Also, I agree about political coronations being bad, but it's not hard to figure out who would be able to run. There's a finite number of Democratic current and former Senators, Governors, and Vice-Presidents (IIRC the last person to run for President without having been one of those things was like... Eisenhower?) out there, and an even smaller number who are scandal-free enough, big enough in the party, charismatic enough, etc to run. So it's really not a hard list to fill out. And, to be honest, almost none of them fill me (as a left-wing Democrat) with any great feelings of joy or hope or desire.

Who We're Missing

This is who would probably be running if Clinton wasn't running:

Michael Bennet, Amy Klobuchar, Joe Biden, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tim Kaine, Russ Feingold, Andrew Cuomo, Martin O'Malley, Jennifer Granholm

And Jim Webb and Brian Schweitzer and Bernie Sanders, but they'd be equally ineffectual as they are now when Clinton is actually running. And there's a couple other people who might like Sherrod Brown (which I would like, since I actually like Sherrod Brown) but for the most part, there's your choices.

Yeah, thats another problem. Like, I'm pretty sure the list of people who could actually be legitimate presidential candidates if Hillary wasn't running, and who are also notably to the left of her, is like... Russ Feingold? And I think that might be it.

Seriously, that's not what the Democratic Party looks like at the moment. Diamond Joe isn't really much to the left of her. Martin O'Malley isn't much to the left of her. None of the New York / Northeastern crew is much to the left of her. Michael Bennet isn't much to the left of her. Like, it's really hard to see where a left candidate comes from.

This is (part of) why the Democrats need to build their bench and start taking local elections seriously, btw. Republicans kick our asses at state elections and that really, really, really needs to change.

she's going to win the nomination (barring death or stroke or something)

that's literally a forgone conclusion

and she's not that controversial on the left, and anyway, the left are going to hold their noses like they always do, or get excited about WOMAN PRESIDENT. whether or not that means she wins, i don't think she's a particularly bad candidate, and honestly probably one of the better ones on the democratic bench.

like, tbh, running a more progressive candidate would entail just as much risk.

Hey, I'm on the left and I can say that she is controversial a lot of people flat out don't like her. You'd get better agreement on tearing up the term limits and letting Bill run again (and yes, I know that is not a realistic thing it is hyperbole) that you would on having Hilary be prez. I agree if it does come to it, yeah, we're going to hold our nose simply because the worst Democrat is better than the best Republican. However I know that is not going to fly for the floating voters.

Everyone knows there is a ton of crap in her and Bill's closets and the Republican party is sure to have been stockpiling it. She is the easiest candidate to smear and to have it stick, and with elections so tightly fought now every smear will hurt.
