Most people I follow acknowledge Joe's flaws and the shittiness of him keeping this a secret from Iris but they still like him simply because he's a better character than the emotionally/verbally abusive father that is his Arrow counterpart Quentin Lance.

Aw, I really like his relationship with Laurel (and Sara to a slightly lesser extent just because I haven't seen as much with the two of them); it's my favorite part of the show. It's not a perfect relationship, but even the times where they get angry and hurtful towards each other feels real to me (I'm only a little over halfway through season two though so maybe I haven't gotten to the part where he's emotionally/verbally abusive)

Without even getting into the things he's done in season three... He used her as live bait to catch the Arrow in season one and knowingly put her in danger. I don't really understand how the relationship came back from that to be honest.

Yeah. Quentin's been shitty to Oliver and Laurel without always a good reason for it and in the latest arc he's been basically taking out his hurt over being deceived about Sara, on "The Arrow" aka Oliver. :|

Still, Joe's overprotectiveness about Iris is not really rational and she would do better knowing Barry is the Flash, if only because she could work her contacts in journalism to try and find out about Harrison Wells.
