What pisses me off is that at this point, Iris is the only character on the show who doesn't know Barry's identity. It's turned into a show about a whole bunch of people conspiring to keep a secret from one person. And they're not even throwing her a surprise party.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Joe, but.....yeah. Especially after this week's episode. It's really really aggravating. There is no reason whatsoever to keep lying to her now, especially since they decided it was better to let Eddie, of all people, in on the secret rather than to just tell Iris. It's beyond absurd.

SA as above - I realized I only responded to the first part of your secret. Yeah, I don't know what part of fandom you're in, but I've seen a lot of complaints about it, especially since this week's episode aired.

idk if you go on tumblr but the iris tag actually has a lot of posts with people complaining about this very thing (especially after the recent episode where eddie finds out that barry is the flash and doesn't seem to agree with joe that she should be kept in the dark)

Yeah, everyone I follow has been complaining non-stop about that bullshit. It's completely ridiculously stupid that they're continuing to lie to Iris. Some nonny said that they think it's being done consciously and Iris is going to let them have it. But I have watched too much tv to have any faith in that happening.

Somebody better call Joan Garrick.

Well, I dunno about the fandom, but I can tell you that you haven't heard me complaining about that because the moment I saw that gimmick (along with other "superhero" gimmicks, goodness, it was one after the other one in the pilot) coming during the first half of the first episode I called it quits.

I have been complaining about it from he start, and I'm not always opposed to the trope of keeping an identity secret to keep your loved ones safe. I don't think it's inherently sexist either, as much as it is a tool for creating drama, or comedy... Sailor Moon, and Wonder Woman have secret identities as well. However it can lead to sexism if handled poorly, as here (and for sure silver age Superman).

The problem is with Iris it plain doesn't work, she is intent on investigating the Flash and his enemies and she would be much safer if she knew to speed dial Barry when she gets into a sticky situation. And I think Barry did at one point try to make an argument to that effect but Joe basically told him he was thinking with his penis. So yeah Joe is on the list.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I think if it'd been up to Barry, he'd have told her right away. But Joe made him promise not to, and now it kind of seems like he's bought into Joe's line of thinking.

Is that Jesse L. Martin?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. He plays Joe West on The Flash.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
*Sigh* Sexism and misogyny are related but different things. This is sexism. Also, what happy place are you NOT seeing a litany of "Ugh! Everyone's lying to Iris!! STAHP!"

And while you couldn't have known it at the time, how do feel about Eddie calling everyone or on it?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
* calling out.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I was actually really happy that the show let as many people into the secret as it did and I firmly believe that they will not drag out Iris not knowing for too long. It really feels like she'll know by the end of the season, which is lightening fast compared to a lot of other superhero shows. I mean, Barry's already told her he loves her, which usually is strung out for seasons and seasons.

I love Joe. I love his relationship with Barry. As a policeman, I can accept him being overprotective. To me, he feels just as protective of Barry as Iris, so I don't think it's a girl-thing.

And even if Iris did know, I feel like it wouldn't improve her character. Her reaction to Barry dating Linda has really soured me on her.

Most people I follow acknowledge Joe's flaws and the shittiness of him keeping this a secret from Iris but they still like him simply because he's a better character than the emotionally/verbally abusive father that is his Arrow counterpart Quentin Lance.

Aw, I really like his relationship with Laurel (and Sara to a slightly lesser extent just because I haven't seen as much with the two of them); it's my favorite part of the show. It's not a perfect relationship, but even the times where they get angry and hurtful towards each other feels real to me (I'm only a little over halfway through season two though so maybe I haven't gotten to the part where he's emotionally/verbally abusive)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Without even getting into the things he's done in season three... He used her as live bait to catch the Arrow in season one and knowingly put her in danger. I don't really understand how the relationship came back from that to be honest.

Yeah. Quentin's been shitty to Oliver and Laurel without always a good reason for it and in the latest arc he's been basically taking out his hurt over being deceived about Sara, on "The Arrow" aka Oliver. :|

Still, Joe's overprotectiveness about Iris is not really rational and she would do better knowing Barry is the Flash, if only because she could work her contacts in journalism to try and find out about Harrison Wells.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
don't care, love joe

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
i don't agree that this is inherently sexist, at least in this series's case.

the whole thing about joe is one thing - that's her father and while i don't really think barry keeping his identity a secret would have anything to do with her protection, i think there's a different reason.

in the beginning of the season, it's shown that barry wanted to confess but she let him down gently. not only that, iris has a lot more going on for her than just barry and her dad. she's in school, she's at work, she's dating eddie. she doesn't really need that extra bullshit about worrying about barry and his safety (especially since they grew up together especially when his mom died and dad was arrested).

from this point of view, barry doesn't have a reason to tell her - she's living her own life and he doesn't want her to worry about him, stop him, or get involved in this stuff (which is why he's trying to stop her from blogging about "the streak"). prior to the lighting strike, he was already overly obsessed with his parents' case - and he already doesn't tell her about this either. would you consider that sexist?

maybe it does come off as sexist, especially from joe's point of view. it's understandable that as a father, he's going to be protective. as a cop, he's going to be even more so.

but with just barry, there's really no reason to tell her. i like how they set this up to where iris has her own life and other things going for her other than just the love interest. that is a step in the right direction, in all honesty.

Text: I’ve really disliked Joe from day one because of him demanding Barry keep being the Flash secret from Iris for no actual reason.

I rolled my eyes when that happened, thinking by now we should be past the creepy old trope of superheroes lying to their love interests because the silly little girl must be lied to and treated like a child by all the men in her life for her own good.

I’ve only just caught up (it was airing a few weeks behind in my country) and delved into the fandom, which I expected to be up in arms but I haven’t seen one single indictment of this misogynistic douchebaggery.

I haven’t even seen anyone complain about it narratively which I can’t understand because it really is poor writing. They’ve just arbitrarily decided that we must accept Irish shouldn’t know because that’s ~the superhero way,~ even though Joe doesn’t fit the typical criteria of “character who is allowed to know a superhero’s identity.”

tl;dr: I think either Iris should have been let in at the start or Joe shouldn’t have been and it bugs me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't misogyny. I don't think it's really even sexism, because I doubt Joe would be on board with Iris knowing about Barry's secret identity if she were his son Ira instead. He doesn't want Iris kept in the dark because she's a woman, he wants her kept in the dark because she's his child, and he knows just how dangerous being a normal human tangled up in superhero shit can be. He keeps things from Barry too, based on similar logic - "what they don't know can't hurt them".

It isn't really rational, because her association with the Flash puts her at risk whether she knows he's Barry or not, but it's the sort of irrationality that makes sense for a police detective single father who's accustomed to being able to protect his kids from the evils of the world, and to compartmentalizing so that the shit Detective West sees doesn't bleed over too badly into his home life.
