Australia! I have family there, and getting to visit them for free would be awesome.

Frankly, I don't blame the various license holders (both the movie and the comic) for modernizing it - nostalgia for the 80s (as opposed to nostalgia for certain 80s properties) a) is well past, and b) tended to be couched in good-natured mockery, and reducing Jem to a joke about the 80s would be doing it a disservice, and trying to do it (semi-)seriously in the 80s would guarantee it tanking.

I can give you a quick example, if you like? Just a quick five card spread and resulting story using my favourite storytelling deck:

1) The Questioner: The Emperor (upright)
2) The Past/Past Influences: Five of Pentacles (upright)
3) The Future/Coming Influences: Eight of Swords (upright)
4) Reason Behind Question: Ace of Wands (reversed)
5) The Development/Potential/Possibility: Four of Cups (reversed)

I'm giving the card meanings as offered in the booklet that came with my deck --Norbert Lösche's Cosmic Tarot-- and then my more liberal interpretation of them in a narrative setting. I generally don't pay too much attention to reversed/upright when in narrative mode, using all the suggested meanings as made sense by my plotting rather than necessarily in the order they come in. I use each of the cards as a story element - character (questioner), backstory (past influences), incoming plot points (future influences), plot startpoint (reason for query), general direction of plot from here (possibilities). Different spreads give slightly different elements, but the five card spread is good for a basic shape.

So. This one has given us the following:

1) Questioner/Main Character

The Emperor: masculine power, shaping of the material world, rulership, will, severity, stability, power and its danger, force

2) Past Influences/Backstory

Five of Pentacles: worry, torture, chaos, poverty, effort, tension, need, idleness, immorality, belief in the future, reconciliation

3) Future Influences/Incoming Plot Elements

Eight of Swords: disturbance, interference, limitation, conflict, blame, resistance, problematic thoughts, mental prison, delimitation of own ideas, great mental tasks

4) Reason for Question/Plot Instigator

Ace of Wands: origin, beginning, source, birth, creativity, blind power, inheritance, identity, self-realisation

5) Possibility/Direction of Plot

Four of Cups: exuberance, uncertain feelings, weariness, decaying joy, refusal, insight, reflection, new possibilities, anticipation

To me, this looks like the story of a new king/ruler, who comes to power in the aftermath of an extremely bad time for his nation, who's at first joyous at having won free of that darkness and taken his throne, but soon becomes beset with worries and doubts about his fitness for the role and the question of how he's going to put his kingdom back together and where to take it from here. Possibly, given the future/incoming elements, because his rule is being actively interfered with by an outside force (or remnants of the inside ones).

I'd say the backstory event, to since it contains lots of torture, poverty, and chaos, but no controlling elements like a Devil, was probably a civil war, which allows the card's flipsides of reconcilation and belief in the future to be the immediate backstory and our boy's ascension. Some of those elements may refer to him personally (torture), and he's emerged at the start as a severe, driven man (Emperor), glad to be free, and determined to reshape his nation. As he settles into his new role, though, reborn as the new king (Ace of Wands), he's wondering about what he's inherited in his shattered kingdom, and slowly coalescing his plans for where he wants it to go. To judge from the plot card, Four of Cups, he goes through a crisis of faith in himself as the Coming Influences from the Eight of Swords start affecting his judgement, making him despair of being able to uplift his country, but both of the future cards offer hope that he will eventually break through this and succeed in at least getting started (insight, delimitation of own ideas, great mental tasks, new possibilities, anticipation).

So, overall, I think this is the story of a man who comes to power out of the ruins of a shattered nation, struggles mightily with his new responsibility and the chaotic elements that still plague his newly-freed nation, but eventually gets his traction as a ruler and begins the laborious process of rebuilding.

Voila. A quick and dirty story sketch based on the archetypal imagery of the tarot. Heh. And you can do as many of these as you like. It really is a bundle of fun.

I'm sorry, I don't know. I just felt your plea deserved some kind of response.

Haven't watched Zardoz in many years, and now really must again soon.

Some Roman writers, in their anti-Christian polemics, have suggested that Jesus had a father who was a Roman soldier. Celsus in particular mentions this. Could have been true, or could have simply been an attempt to discredit Christianity. Celsus was one of the more biting writers, and iirc he wrote in the third century, maybe during Diocletian when there was a crackdown on Christianity? in which case, discrediting the religion was definitely in his interest.

The Mary Magdalene thing and children sounds like a massive stretch, what was their source for that? Another polemic? I never heard that one, and I've read several of the more famous ones, or rather, what's left of them. (Porphyry, Celsus, Emperor Julian, etc)

Of course, anti-Christian polemics and apologists both were writing hundreds of years after Jesus. Even the Gospels are generally believed by scholars to have been written long after the death of Jesus (up to a hundred years by rough estimates). It's not a stretch to suggest his origin story, as it were, was exaggerated or fabricated at some point. But I'm not sure there's "evidence" one way or the other about who his father was.

IMO if that happens though, it'll only be in Norman's mind

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking too. Even if Norma is subconsciously in love with Norman, I'm just not sure if the show would have her actually cross that line, especially since she has her own devastating history with incest (who knows though).

I'm kind of concerned for Emma ngl. I'm worried that she'll either get killed off due to complications with her illness or that Norman will kill her during one of his fits. Run away, Emma

(lol, this is your fs ninja bff btw. Figures that we both like this pairing of all things)

I'm actually making a deck of cards for one of the series we're writing with Rogan! :D It's a combo of playing cards and tarot. We always dreamed of having a playing deck as tiny kids and what's the point of being an adult, I ask you, if you don't use it to fulfill little fun dreams like that?

I am disappointed in the lack of villains. :( The whole point of the big card deck is you get to really relish a bunch of characters who normally wouldn't make it into that kind of stuff!

The Wire (spoilers)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-04-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I made this thread just to talk about The Wire. I finished it last night and watched the last montage 4 times in a row. I really loved how it ended for all the characters (even the bad endings such as Duquan) EXCEPT for the lawyer.

I particularly loved how Bubbles and Namond were able to succeed in turning their lives around. I was really worried about them.

I do wish they had shown a bit more of Prez is season 5. At least they didn't leave us completely in the dark about how he was faring.

I am amazed none of the main cops died. It was actually really refreshing for a show to end without half the cast dead.

Things you thought you were exceptionally good at as a kid/teen/young adult and now doubt?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily in a "my dreams are forever shattered" way, although that works too.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This sounds very mild and sane compared to what I do, anon, so don't worry.

Re: Actually..

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you're a very, very naive human being with no comprehension of how the powers of influence work on a person's mind.

Do you think everyone with an eating disorder was raised by people who made them feel shit about their bodies? You don't think any of them were raised in environments where despite the best efforts of their families to make the most healthy environment possible, they have this illness anyway?

Ever heard of peer pressure? Ever heard of adolescents developing self-esteem issues because their barometer of how they think they/the world should be shifts from being influenced by their parents to being influenced by the world at large (as it should be, unfortunately in some cases it's for the worst).

Did your parents raise you to never be influenced by anything at all? You've never done a single thing because you saw someone else advocate/endorse/enthuse about it? That's influence. That happens, regardless of how you try and protect people from it.

To think that raising a child 'properly' is somehow going to make them 100% immune to being influenced by others, or to having e.g. the media amplify an illness or disorder they have anyway is incredibly naive.

Man, anon, I am just wracking my brain and I can't figure out who it would be.

For some reason I keep thinking of Audrey Hepburn, though. And I'd go on a long drive through a beautiful slice of countryside with her. Why? I don't know. It just seems like it would be nice.

AYRT

I'm 36.

If you genuinely believe the Tumblr attitude is in any way the attitude of real life, then you're about the most immature 39 year old I've ever met.

Those are kids trying to feel better about themselves in a world that makes them feel like shit. It's in no way a reflection of any reality.

Archaeology student, I can make makeshift prehistoric weapons and know some stuff about finding food as a hunter gatherer. I might be more useful stranded on a desert island then in the zombie apocalypses.

I thought it was the writer's strike that fucked that season over. Suddenly they had to wrap up the plot for end of season and hadn't had time to develop it, so they gave us a stinking pile of shit when they should have just held it over until the next damn season.

Re: Characterization You Hate

(Anonymous) 2015-04-04 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This, this, this. I really dislike it when people turn competent and cool male characters into poor, sad, hurt, misunderstood, self-sacrificing little babies who have a shitload of angst and a dash of self-confidence issues on the side. And when they usually demonize other characters to make the character they like look even better.
