And that 'seedy underbelly' bullshit is why a lot of us hated those shows in most part and the new series.

Re: Characterization You Hate

Woobie Rumpelstiltskin. Honestly, given that I'm not a big Regina fan and outright hate Hook, I should hate woobie versions of them more, but as far as fic goes, I just scroll on by, and I stopped watching OUAT last season, so I don't have to watch the show do it.

Woobie Rumple drives me nuts. Not so much "cries when his life turns to shit even when some/most times it's his fault" Rumple; that's canon. But he's not helpless. He was happily married to Milah and she loved him, he seduced Cora and she almost ran away with him--it's not likely he had no clue what to do with a woman by the time he met Belle. He raised a kid for 14 years and worked at a profession that kept him and Milah in food and clothes, before he went off to war. He was a manipulative bastard and powerful sorcerer par excellence for 200+ years.

Despite making a living at a traditionally feminine skill, he's not a cringing weepy mess who's nothing without a Belle to call him "baby" while he whimpers and clings to her legs and she pets his hair. He's not a manly man stereotype, but the way he's written sometimes runs straight into my infantilization squick.

He's a bastard. He loves Belle, he loves Bae, he loved Milah, and he was still an asshole to all three. And the only circumstance where he's both helpless and blameless is if he's being compelled by the dagger.

I was speaking more of visual appeal.

Though thinking about someone's mustache tickling me during a kiss kinda makes me cringe a little. Just not so appealing. :/

Dear god, she's wearing a corset you fucking idiot. And pro tip, most thin-pro folks? Have called her a fatty.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
You have never seen thin-spro or women in corsets then have you. According to the thinspro people Cinderlla there is a fat fat fatty.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
She was not on a liquid diet for the role Jesus fucking christ. If she was she broke Disney rules and will find herself in deep shit. She is in a corset.

sorry! ^^;

Re: Awkward questions thread

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, it sounds insensitive because it is. Your girlfriend is fighting in a literally life or death situation*, but what's your concern here? Your libido. Holy shitsnacks, Batman. So let me confirm: there is no diplomatic way to hint to your girlfriend that you're totally cool with her illness and all, but you're going to need a firm timeline for when she'll be able to attend to your sexual needs.

It sounds like you haven't progressed very far with this relationship. If you're not willing to give her enough time to, you know, regain her health from the very serious illness and difficult treatment she's undergoing before you focus on your love life, then you're not the partner she needs. It's called "priorities". Her health trumps your need to get some, and that will be true for every single girlfriend you ever have.

* I don't think you quite understand how cancer and chemo works. Saying things like "this round of chemo should take care of the cancer completely" suggests that you don't have a good grasp on it. There are no guarantees in cancer. There are types of cancer where your chances are better than others, but there is no "one more round of chemo and voila, you're cured!" It's always a case of wait and see, hoping for remission but knowing the cancer can come back. Always.

She also later attempted to joking about the liquid diet shit and said it was mostly corset.

Maybe I don't understand how Hugo voting works, but can you not simply note for people who aren't on the Sad Puppy wishlist?

When historians accept that there was a historical Jesus, what that really means is that there isn't really any evidence either way, and it's not too farfetched that there was a rabbi named Yeshua ben Yosef who pissed off the Romans, and hey, if there's smoke there must be fire, right?

Even if there was a real Yeshua ben Yosef, Rebel Rabbi, they don't think that he was raised from the dead, or that he said most of what the Bible he said.

Outsider perspective looking in here.

I think it's because mass media influences each and every one of us in so many different ways that it becomes really hard to tell whether or not were we actually influenced by the media or by our life experiences.

We all have our separate lives and we all have our own experiences growing up. Our parents, our friends, our neighborhood, country, faith... all of these factors play a part in our childhood and youth. Add media into the mix and it becomes confusing and complicating: just where does your true self end and where your media-influenced parts begin?

Some people can see the boundaries, but some don't. We all love to talk about movies and fanfics and games and all, but we don't talk in-depth about religion or politics or our body since 1) it makes us uncomfortable/defensive and 2) it is going against the main point of this comm (barring the General Comments). Add misinformation and hundreds of thousands of people adding their opinion and suddenly it's not surprising to see some ditching the issue entirely and calling it a non-issue.

and yes, I know. I'm putting in my two cents here, sue me.

Also, I think there's a bit of... I won't say elitism but... something-ism in the issue. We like to think that we are "above" those who are influenced by the media like the pro-anorexics. We like to think that we don't follow blindly what we see, but we admit to buying stuff or being attracted to someone/thing just by reading or listening or just outright looking at them from movies and magazines. Isn't that being influenced by the media already? Of course, then we would try to make up excuses for it.

We are all different. We are all influenced. Saying we aren't is just outright bullshit. Whether or not it's by the media or something otherwise, and how much... that's the question.

wow, that ended up being longer than I thought

Oh, it absolutely shows their true colors. They can claim to be all about enthusiasm for SF and inclusion for some vague group of people they think don't have a voice (i.e. dogwhistle terms for old white guys who lean hard right or at least anyone who isn't female, non-white or liberal), but their campaign to make this about beating the nasty feminists and SJWs makes it clear what they really mean, nudge nudge wink wink.

They do not have a single dry shit about the genre. They just want to score a "win" by lifting up their clique as a whole and their own underwhelming work in particular.

Text: I judge people who claim to be fans but haven’t actually read any of the books. Especially the ones who like to toss out-of-context quotes at anyone who dares to question their headcanons.

Bonus Secret: I like the original series more than the next generation. Don’t get me wrong, Jesus is a pretty cool guy (he turns water into booze and doesn’t afraid of anything) and undeniably one of th greatest literary protagonists of all time, but TOS has more action and epicness than TNG.

I think the rule of thumb is three attempts to set up meetings on your part. If each one fails and the friend doesn't step up their effort to make it happen, it's time to do a slow fade and find new friends.

Omg taxes are the beacon of hope. We cherish accountants because they are the symbol of normalcy that will surely return, because we will NOT be defeated by the undead.

Hello, out-of-context quotes. She did not say she was on a liquid diet. Go back and read the ACTUAL source, instead of just reblogging what you heard from a friend of a friend of a friend.

I'm pretty much the same way.

It's a behavioral trend I have very little patience for, but I try to be understanding. It's not something I can really live with in a relationship though, even a close platonic one. Being able to follow through on commitments is important to me even for my friends - it's such a letdown when you look forward to something for a long time and then boom, it doesn't happen. :/
