Steven Universe and the 100. I was thinking of checking them out. Can someone convince me?

Also interested in the 100!

It has a big thing for decompressed story telling. If you enjoy having things stretched out as long as possible, and episode after episode or reaction shots and people arguing in order to avoid advancing the plot too quickly, then go for it. Be warned, there is only about three episodes worth of old-style episodic tv's worth of plot drawn out of an entire season.

Not sure, but it seems like an interesting concept to try out.

It's not bad. I got a little flaily watching, because i get *so annoyed* with the 'slap some mud on it, we're good' kind of TV medicine, but! on the other hand, people who got smacked, knocked out, shot, knifed, whatever - STILL HAD INJURIES in the next episode. They actually had wound continuity, which was amazing.

I could argue with the characters all day about dumb shite they did, but i also enjoyed it, there are some cool characters, the world-building is fun, and the show has a Wiki page for the languages they made up, which is awesome.

Give it a go!

What show are you watching? If anything The 100 has been one of the fastest paced shows I've watched in recent years. Every episode contributes to the plot, they are constantly changing up the status quo. And yeah, people argue, but that's because one of the central themes is government (anarchy vs order) and what makes effective vs good leadership.

Re: Should I watch/read this?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The 100 could have wrapped season 1 in five episodes, and season 2 in a two parter if they stripped out all the deliberate false starts and sidetracks. Each episode is mostly timewasting to get to a setup for a cliffhanger, which is defused as soon as the next episode starts.

There is no examination of what makes for good leadership. The only thing the show says you need to be a good leader is be called Clarke, the script will endorse you in all sorts of increasingly unlikely ways if you are.

By your logic ALL shows can be reduced to 20% of their run time by taking out all the shit that actually happens. Especially what you refer to as "old style episodic tv."

Sorry you don't like character development? For me, the slow descent into Lord of the Flies madness culminating in episode four with EVERYTHING IS CHAOS OH SHIT WE NEED SOME RULES AND LEADERSHIP was one of my favorite things to watch ever. And that doesn't even begin to touch on Bellamy Blake's gradual redemption as well as the war with the Grounders.

As for season two, I high doubt you could pack the introduction of the Mountain Men, Clarke's escape from Mount Weather, Finn's stuff, Lincoln's stuff (which is the reason the alliance was able to happen), the actual alliance, Clarke's "Bad Decision" TM, Bellamy's infiltration, and then the ACTUAL TWO PARTER FINALE into a single two parter. And then Murphy and Jaha's grand adventure was just plain fun.

Season 1 of the 100 is quite good, season 2 has Clarke going full-bore Mary Sue. Admittedly season 2 does have a rampaging flesh-devouring gorilla though. Your choice.

I kind of love to hate s2 Clarke because she's a jerk, but she absolutely is not a Mary-Sue, wtf.

Right, the 17 year old with the wisdom and judgement of a forty year old, and who inadvertanly woos the leader of the savage natives through her purepureness, not to mention having the all the command structures of two different groups of fucking actual adults suddenly fall in line behind her, none of that comes as Mary Sue? Not even her super monkey-fighting skills that outdo the person who had to live with irradiated superwildlife for her entire life? Non of that is sueworthy?

Re: Should I watch/read this?

I'll grant you the 17 vs adult stuff because hey. It's the CW. Teens being front and center is like their MO.

But - and trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible - a lot of her decision also blow up in her face. So definitely not Mary Sue.

As for the gorilla thing, she didn't have better fighting skills. She just found out how she could use her environment to her advantage, which lines up with all the shit she had to deal with in season 1 as well as the general problem solving environment of the Ark.

How so?

Re: Should I watch/read this?

[personal profile] manzana 2015-04-05 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Steven Universe has a lot of "random episodic fluff" episodes before the various plots start kicking in -- BUT the introduction to those various plot things (like some characters and background info) appear in those earlier episodic, er, episodes.

If you're a patient person and like cute characters and pretty animation it's not a bad wait in any way, though.

Disclaimer: I'm not caught up entirely. I've actually never watched the first episode (which I intend to remedy later on).

Where are you watching it?

Re: Should I watch/read this?

[personal profile] manzana 2015-04-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
On TV. I think I'll catch up online (this is the kind of show I want to be in the right mood to watch it, instead of just powering through. That would ruin its magic)

I just finished Steven Universe and my answer is: depends on what you want out of it. Its very nice if you want something light and easy to watch (I watched it while working) but if you want a more immediately plot driven, serious show, you might get frustrated with it.

This is helpful for me, I want light and easy not plot driven c:

Re: Should I watch/read this?

[personal profile] othellia 2015-04-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So yeah, my two cents vs the anons.

I love the 100. I switched my default icon from The Avengers to The 100. I'm attempting to get a The 100 land comm off the ground.

If you liked the newer Battlestar Galactica, you will like The 100. There's a strong focus on the survival aspects as well as government and politics and what it means to be a leader. Season 2 switches stuff up a bit, introduces new characters, societies, aspects, but season 1 is mostly survival and political focused.

There's also a Game of Thrones sort of feeling to it, in the sense of a strong over-arching narrative, no one is safe, and there ends up being a bunch of grey and grey-black morality with every single side having their reasons and justifications for their actions. I'd say overall it's more BSG than GoT though.

It's the CW, so expect a lot of teens. There are some pretty cool adult characters though. And the nature of the Ark (the giant spaceship all the main characters were living on before the start of the show) makes it so that most of the teen characters have some kind of specialization. You've got mechanics, chemists, pseudo-pre med... like all of them pool their skills to try and survive.

WARNING: there is a "Love Triangle" but it was handled in one of the best ways I've seen TV love triangles.

What else. Oh yeah, the one anon saying that Clarke is a Mary Sue. Clarke is the main character (and girl in my icons), she is capable and head strong. She becomes the leader of the 100. She also has faults. As she begins to gain experience, she puts her own opinions and thoughts over those of others. She believes she knows what's best and has to do what she must for the Greater Good. This sometimes leads to Bad Things. Which, I think, is frankly amazing in a main character.

Clarke is the mighty whitey girl who is a mother to every teen despite being only 17 and inspirational and experienced leader to the adults, despite being 17 and having spent most of her life drawing pictures on the walls. She also causes the leader of the savage grounders to fall in love with her, just through existing near her.

Re: Should I watch/read this?

[personal profile] othellia 2015-04-05 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
When has she been an inspirational and experienced leader to the adults? Jaha doesn't give a fuck about her, her mom is constantly questioning her, and Kane only goes along with it because he knows Lexa likes Clarke better than the adults.

As for the mighty whitey part, taking out the racial bit, you might as well say that ATLA is terrible because Katara is mother-like to the team and grew up without an official waterbending instructor. In fact all the kid/teen characters in ATLA are just as, if not more powerful, than the adults.

Or Harry Potter is terrible, because they're also all under 17 for the most part and constantly do things that adults don't.

Or the Hunger Games is terrible because Katniss.

You are blaming The 100 for basic conventions of genre.

I've never seen the 100, but yes on the Steven Universe. The first few episodes seem more generic but it gets tighter. It tends to work better if you DON'T binge it, but say, watch one or two a day as you catch up. It can be a little repetitive if you do it all at once.
