Steven Universe and the 100. I was thinking of checking them out. Can someone convince me?

Season 1 of the 100 is quite good, season 2 has Clarke going full-bore Mary Sue. Admittedly season 2 does have a rampaging flesh-devouring gorilla though. Your choice.

Steven Universe has a lot of "random episodic fluff" episodes before the various plots start kicking in -- BUT the introduction to those various plot things (like some characters and background info) appear in those earlier episodic, er, episodes.

If you're a patient person and like cute characters and pretty animation it's not a bad wait in any way, though.

Disclaimer: I'm not caught up entirely. I've actually never watched the first episode (which I intend to remedy later on).

I just finished Steven Universe and my answer is: depends on what you want out of it. Its very nice if you want something light and easy to watch (I watched it while working) but if you want a more immediately plot driven, serious show, you might get frustrated with it.

So yeah, my two cents vs the anons.

I love the 100. I switched my default icon from The Avengers to The 100. I'm attempting to get a The 100 land comm off the ground.

If you liked the newer Battlestar Galactica, you will like The 100. There's a strong focus on the survival aspects as well as government and politics and what it means to be a leader. Season 2 switches stuff up a bit, introduces new characters, societies, aspects, but season 1 is mostly survival and political focused.

There's also a Game of Thrones sort of feeling to it, in the sense of a strong over-arching narrative, no one is safe, and there ends up being a bunch of grey and grey-black morality with every single side having their reasons and justifications for their actions. I'd say overall it's more BSG than GoT though.

It's the CW, so expect a lot of teens. There are some pretty cool adult characters though. And the nature of the Ark (the giant spaceship all the main characters were living on before the start of the show) makes it so that most of the teen characters have some kind of specialization. You've got mechanics, chemists, pseudo-pre med... like all of them pool their skills to try and survive.

WARNING: there is a "Love Triangle" but it was handled in one of the best ways I've seen TV love triangles.

What else. Oh yeah, the one anon saying that Clarke is a Mary Sue. Clarke is the main character (and girl in my icons), she is capable and head strong. She becomes the leader of the 100. She also has faults. As she begins to gain experience, she puts her own opinions and thoughts over those of others. She believes she knows what's best and has to do what she must for the Greater Good. This sometimes leads to Bad Things. Which, I think, is frankly amazing in a main character.

I've never seen the 100, but yes on the Steven Universe. The first few episodes seem more generic but it gets tighter. It tends to work better if you DON'T binge it, but say, watch one or two a day as you catch up. It can be a little repetitive if you do it all at once.

Outlander? Is the show really as world-shatteringly great as it is made out to be? Or is it a fairly standard period romance, just with a slight time-trvel twist?

Re: Should I watch/read this?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the first season of Outlander more than I thought I would. I'd say it does a pretty good job of being beautiful and artistic, and I wouldn't say the romance was all that suffocating. At least in the first season. I've heard a lot of people agree that it's better than they expected it to be, but I guess that really just depends on what you expect going into it.

I didn't know anything about the books. I only saw the first 6 episodes of Season 1. I liked the actress that plays the main character.

Re: Should I watch/read this?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither the books nor the show is anywhere near "world-shatteringly great". What I've seen of the show so far actually helps smooth over the rough, WTF spots in the book but there is a LOT of WTF to make up for, so I don't know how successful they'll be in the long run. It's worth a look if you enjoy romance or period drama, though.

Vikings? Gotham? The flash?

Re: Should I watch/read this?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-05 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotham is good, if you can remember it is not an Origin Story for Batman (that is tangential), it is an Origin Story for The Penguin. A lot of people, looking at Tor's regular reviewer in particular here, can't seem to grasp that. If you can grok that, then you'll love it.

If you are into crime noir like The Maltese Falcon, China Town or even modern noir like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, watch Gotham. It has that snappy dialog that is found in noir. Everyone is crooked. Even the good guys are shady. And it's beautifully directed.

The Flash...I love the Flash. You ever watch Quantum Leap? Imagine Sam Beckett as a superhero. Instead of jumping into other people's bodies, he is a speedster. Still tries to help people, while being super likable. (Slight spoiler, there is even a point where Barry, aka The Flash times travels and the first thing out of his mouth? "Oh, boy.")

Vikings. Really good fights. Ultra violence. Good acting. And the theme song will get stuck in your head.

I really like Gotham, especially as someone who is a fan of Batman's Rogues but not really Bruce himself. Its sort of campy at times but it combines villain origins, especially a wildly entertaining Penguin origin, with some interesting crime drama. (My roommate especially likes that a large part of the story focuses on mob drama.)

I just watched a couple of episodes of The Flash recently and was surprised by how enjoyable it was. I'm not sure if I'm going to make it a regular thing, but it looks promising.

I quite like Gotham. As was said above, it's really not a Batman origin story, but I've always loved the setting and supporting characters surrounding Batman more than I love Batman himself, so I really dig it (I like the Robins and Batgirls best and they haven't been born yet, but it's still good). Right now, it's kinda like Gotham + The Jada Pinkett Smith Kicks Ass and Takes Names Show, and that's cool. Plus, it has Sean Pertwee and Donal Logue.

I like Gotham for the most part but I think it's one of those that either hits you or it doesn't. I can see some people who generally like Batman not liking it. I think if certain characters speak to you, you'll love it. I think the kid actors are really good for kid actors, and the rest of the cast is pretty solid.

I LOVE The Flash. It's upbeat for a superhero show (especially compared to Arrow). I love the family element between Barry and his adopted dad. I love that Barry's already told a bunch of people who he is so he's not on his own figuring out his powers. I feel like the writers are doing a great job of not doing a lot of the stupid stuff that bogged down Smallville; they're taking chances and giving us the villains we want to see right now instead of making us wait. I'm very impressed with the direction they're taking the show. I would definitely recommend this show.

What's worth watching?
I've heard some positive things about House of Cards and that Hemlock Grove is disturbing.

House of Cards is pretty damn good. I hate both politics and dramas, so for me to enjoy a political drama means a hell of a lot. It's still a show I can only watch about three episodes of in a stretch, though, or else I get bogged down in intrigue and plot.
