Since you seem to know a bit about it - aside from the biking thing - do you know what kind of exercises or sports are useful but do NOT put too much stress on feet and legs, ankles specifically? Preferably stuff I can do on my own? As I said, I do have barbells - though not even sure what's the best exercise with them.

Swimming, using an elliptical machine to run/walk (sometimes also acquired cheaply on craigslist), all types of barbell exercises for working the upper body (curls, shrugs, arm raised, tricep pulls, rows).

Deadlifts are probably the best exercise you can do for a total body workout, and they're generally not that harsh on your legs if you ease into them and only do a few at a time.

That said, I'm not sure exactly why you're avoiding putting stress on your legs. I'd have to know more to be able to tell you exactly what will be harmful and what won't.

Chronic tendinitis and ankle injury on the right, old knee injury on the left, take your pick. I am also born with joint hypermobility, so all my joints subluxate or dislocate (yes, all of them, though some more easily than others), and there's a whole set of sports I shouldn't technically do. But then, gaining muscle mass could stabilize them, so that's an argument for finding ways to do that. Even just walking for too long will make sure I will be in pain and limping the next day, though. The excess weight doesn't help, as you can imagine.

Okay, yeah, I would recommend deadlifts and other strength training for the legs on a very limited basis, then.

On the one hand, getting a better muscle base is useful for both losing weight and helping your tendinitis symptoms. On the other hand hypermobility and existing injuries make it dangerous to overdo it.

I'd say do a maximum of 1 set of 5 deadlifts every two days, and gradually work your way up to 10 if you find you can tolerate it. If that's manageable I think you'll find your weight loss efforts will go a lot faster and you'll find yourself able to do more in terms of other leg exercise.

dunno how useful this would be, but this man developed his own tai chi style that specifically goes easily on the ankles and feet:

http://www.williamccchen.com/

I started it from a book, and, while it certainly doesn't compare to the other types of exercise, I did notice that I gained a liiiittle bit of muscular tone on my arms and legs.

So, it could be a good start to get your blood circulating better and your body parts better oxygenated and eventually get ready for harder exercise?

Thank you, that sounds promising!

ayrt

you're welcome!

there is another way it's helped me, personally: I've become way less clumsy! I have a better sense of balance now, I no longer bump into things as often, and I've found myself catching falling objects in the air automatically. And this all started while I was learning like the first 4 or 5 moves out of the sequence

(it takes me like 2 weeks to learn one move, but going slowly doesn't seem to matter)

(Sometimes it makes me feel like a ninja and that's pretty cool :3

(sorry for so many parentheses, I don't know what happened)
