I'm the same about podcasted fics, OP.

But I feel that I'm being rude to my friends list just by cringing every time they announce they've podded another fic. I do appreciate the effort and skill that goes into them. I'll just never listen to them.

You sound polite and reasonable in your secret. Best thing is just to say nothing, if possible. It's never nice to have your fun squashed. If asked, I go with "they're just not for me but I appreciate the time and skill involved" which is what you said already.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get podcasts at all. At least provide a text alternative. I've got other stuff going on that I have to listen to.

I'm the same with podcasted anything.

Podcasts are not my thing either. I always read fic and "hear" the character's voices in my head, having one person read all the voices just takes me out of it so far I get a second hand embarrassment from listening. But I know many people like them a great deal.

I can't do podcasts (I can't do ANYTHING ELSE while taking in auditory info, and just sitting for an hour listening to a thing drives me nuts) but I know a bunch of my friends who use audio books, and I figure it's the same thing. Handy for my friends who are in the car all the time, too anxious to take in text, or are blind.

I take an interest in this stuff because I have at least one blind reader of my comics, so I'm always hoping I can make it more enjoyable for them.

There's nothing wrong with recognizing the skill that goes into something while not liking the thing itself.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been so not into costumes that I turned up to primary school birthday parties in a white dress and said I was a "flower". (Yes I was and probably still am a party pooper.) So hey, at least you're not alone.

I had a lot of anxiety around costumes as a kid (I still hate Halloween) and I was the party pooper through high school during spirit week.

But I still like the idea of cosplaying. It's kinda weird.

I think you should learn to stand up for yourself more, OP. Don't let the sandpits grab you, don't allow yourself to be sucked into the melting asphalt, carpe diem and let your righteous holy light shine bright.

Well, I guess as long as you're not actively shitting on it (I'm thinking back to that recent "cosplay is ruining conventions" bullshit article), you're fine.

I feel the same.

And most of the time I find it annoying at a crowded con. Can't tell you how many times I've been smacked in the face by someone's 'wings' or whatever, lol

It's fine not to like cosplay, OP. You at least tried to get into it and you seem happy that your friends are happy to cosplay, but you're under no obligation to enjoy it yourself.

I hate that the majority of girl costumes seem to be the slutty version of something. Slutty girl versions of boy characters really annoy me.

That being said, a girl in a really great Ms Marvel costume a couple of years ago was really sweet to my daughter when she fangirled all over her and was so excited to meet "the REAL Ms Marvel!"

Nothing wrong with Cosplay as long as you cosplay body appropriate. Bubba Moon was funny as a one off, but I'm just horrified now by stubbly Batgirls and Ultrafat Wolverines and Batmen. If you are a chubster at least cosplay a chubster, and if you are a guy, please at least tuck your package for the leotard. I still have nightmares from Power "Girl"'s superdick last con.

No one has to like every single facet of fandom, OP. Some things just don't do it for you and that's okay. As long as you're not being an ass about it - and your secret suggests you're far from that - then that's okay.

When it comes to your friends, if you're worried about sounding sincere when discussing their cosplays then I think you're probably on the right track with things like complimenting the work that went into it, because you don't have to like/get/enjoy the concept of cosplay to realize someone's put a lot of effort into something. So compliment the aspects you do get, like the effort or the sewing/painting/construction etc. and you'll be fine.

Hey, at least you tried. if it helps, you can now say "It's not for me, but I do respect those who try it."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate it takes skill and talent but I hate that if you are a woman, and you show your face or body you better be damn good looking and/or boobalicious. And if you are, you get groped. Just takes all the appreciation I have for those who are into the costuming and makes it a tawdry thing for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
same tbh

the one time i went a convention was like second hand embarrassment central

You shouldn't feel bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has some things that they just don't enjoy the way many other people seem to enjoy them. It's cool. You're not ruining anyone else's fun with it, so don't feel bad. And sometimes technical appreciation can be just as gratifying than squee - "That's amazingly well put together," is a really nice compliment to anyone who has worked hard on their costume.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I thought I was the only one.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not going to harp on you for your opinion or anything, I just find that so hard to believe! There are cosplays out there that encapsulate characters perfectly for me, there are people that look amazingly like the original actors (there was this Jack Sparrow post going around for a while...) and then there's full body-armor where the looks of the people don't even play a role (501st legion anyone?).

I mean, you do you, you don't have to enjoy it by any means, I'm just really perplexed by it! But you really don't have to like it, as long as you can appreciate your friends' effort and craftsmanship (where it applies), I think they won't ask for more :)

Text: I don’t like cosplay

I’m sorry everyone. I just have never liked it - on me or on anyone else. I know it takes a lot of very hard work and skill to make a costume and there are some amazing things out there but I never think any fictional character looks good translated into cosplay. Ever. Even cosplay for simple stuff like supernatural makes me cringe.

This does make me feel a little left out whenever people go “wow look at this amazing cosplay” and all I can do is go “yeah they worked hard on it” but don’t get even a little bit excited. It also makes me feel bad since I have a bunch of REALLY good friend who do excellent cosplay but I can’t appreciate it the way they deserve.

Yeah, I hear you OP. What I really hate though, is how if you mention it people either can't believe it, or they do the whole "I *guess* it's okay..." as if you're doing something wrong by not enjoying something.
