Did he turn into Linkin Park - Crawling?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I respect your thoughtfulness in not coming out with an outright spoiler. That was a big plot twist and a lot of people won't have seen it yet.

Floki wasn't my favorite character, and still isn't, but the way they handled that storyline was believable for him. Much more believeable than him being a shipwright who in the first series somehow made a whole Viking ship on his own.

There have been some episodes where the character continuity was much more wobbly, but this time it was set up well. This event didn't feel like it was hastily tacked on, but instead integral to this season.

It was such a huge spoiler for the show in its entirety. I figured out it was going to happen before the episode aired (the way the media was promoting it, certain things that were going to happen after the show aired, etc), but I didn't mind how it was executed.

I do like the other character involved, though.

The other character involved is my outright favorite from the series. Their story arc this season has been really complex and interesting, finally fulfilling what they were teasing us about them in season one.

I agree. To me Floki has been the most in character character for this show. He is a devout. He has always viewed Christians as dangerous heretics that could only bring misfortune. I am surprised he didn't do what he did sooner. Probably only because he was afraid of Ragnar. What happened England was the final straw that broke the camel's back. If he had not done something, I would have been shocked.

Man, it's hard to write something as spoilerific as that without trying to be spoilery.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually why I don't like him (among other things about this show). The Norse didn't view Christians as heretics. They just viewed them as worshiping a different god, and some of them, pre-conversion, even started worshiping Jesus right alongside the Norse gods. Like other polytheists, they didn't see as big a conflict between different belief systems as monotheists tend to see.

It's just another thing this show gets very, very wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
How can you know what every one of "the Norse" thought? They were all individuals and tbh it feels as if you are a bit invested in the idea that as pagans they were all laissez faire and laid back in contrast to those nasty evangelising-at-point-of-sword Christians - and in fact we do know that many "Christians" were very syncretistic in belief and practice. You only have to go to Cornwall or the Peak District to see all the "holy wells" *cough*paganspringgoddesssites*cough*

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say, I have despised him since the second (or was it third?) episode when he started gleefully burning those manuscripts. Fuck you, Floki, you Philistine! Fuck you! *cries over lost manuscripts*

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate him. I hope he dies a horrible death very soon.

I can definitely see why Floki did what he did, but I still miss season 1 Floki when he was just the eccentric hummingbird who liked to build boats and cackle insanely.

Man, this season has been shitty for practically all of the characters. The only thing I look forward to is seeing shirtless Rollo with his hair tied up. My standards are pretty low at the moment.

I miss that Floki so much.

He was building and cackling last episode, though, so he felt more like S1 Floki to me.

D'awww, well that's something. I haven't seen the latest episode but I might catch up before the newest one tonight.

The Floki building things part was fun! At least he had some help this time which didn't make me want to shout at my screen in disbelief. (same anon from above)

Floki never trusted Christians. Even in season 1 he kept on calling Athelstan, "Priest" with all the venom in his voice that he could muster while giving him the stink eye. The only difference between the first season and this season is Floki only had to deal with having one Christian around. This season, the place is swarming with them. And everywhere he looks, they are doing horrible, dishonorable things. There hasn't been a good Christian for Floki to go, "Well, I can see the positive things in this religion."

[personal profile] silvereriena 2015-04-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, he was definitely the most devout pagan even in season 1 and it's true that he never warmed up to Athelstan. His steadily increasing somberness makes sense in the face Christianity slowly creeping in around them. I just want to hear him cackle about something again.

Yeah, I love his cackle too. And it's alarming to hear Gustaf Skargard use his actual voice in interview. He sounds nothing like the high pitched, reedy Floki. His real voice is actually deep and smooth. I actually love his real voice.

Honestly

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ragnar seemed like he forgive Floki and treat him like nothing has happened, but Ragnar seems so distinctly "off" in his interactions in the last episode.

I have a theory that while he's giving Floki all of these new responsibilities, he's secretly setting Floki up to fuck himself over.

I'm not expecting it to happen with a good amount of certainty, but if it did happen, I wouldn't be surprised.

Ragnar is a complete headcase even at the best of times. He only cares about raiding. The rest of the world might as well not exist to him.

I also had the theory that he was setting Floki to fuck up. It was a win/win scenario, since if Floki came through then it was great for everyone. Except that many people might die! But that's never stopped Ragnar.

This is exactly what I think is going to happen, and tbh I'm kind of excited for it.

Not because I don't like Floki...though I don't and never have, but because it seems like such wonderful drama. I found last episode mind-numbingly boring (the last few episodes in general have been weak tbh, ignoring a few scenes) so I hope tonight's is exciting. Some 'Ragnar scheming against Floki' or 'Ragnar cackling while rubbing his hands together and awaiting Floki's inevitable fall' would be pretty fascinating.

Re: Honestly

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Last week's episode was as dull as they come, so I'm glad tonight's episode was anything but.
elaminator: (Vikings: Lagertha)

spoilers!

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-04-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Late but...I didn't care for last night's episode either. I love action sequences and fighting so I feel like I should have, but there wasn't enough character interaction for me to get into it. It was very, "Rocks fall, everybody (but the main characters) dies." After a certain point I lost interest in seeing the Vikings get slaughtered and just wanted someone to talk. (I did like a few of Lagertha's scenes, and the end scene with Ragnar speaking to Athelstan was incredible, and Bjorn got a cool couple of sequences, but overall...I'm just not feeling Vikings as much this season.)

A bit off topic, but whenever I hear anything bout Vikings, I have to keep reminding myself that this is a show that exists. I dunno why, but the whole premise seemed so unlikely to me.

Also I really wanna watch it. but I dunno where
