Eh, I doubt it's just Dave. For one thing I just find it hard they'd all agree to do it if it was just that. It also seems like they've been doing a decent amount of retrospective stuff recently so maybe it's just that time.

& I know that Dave has said stuff to that effect in the past. Don't know how true it is, or whether things have changed recently. Hopefully it'll work out.

The problem, as I understand it, is that Dave's wife left him at the absolute peak of his income, so the support and alimony payments in the divorce settlement were based on his income AT THAT TIME. Show business, however, is fickle, so now he's stuck with payments that a major network star could make, but a touring comic and sometime guest star cannot. In other words, dude is FUCKED.

That's my understanding, yes. It's tricky because - I mean, it's not like I've done much research on it but it does seem like a case where we only really have his side of it so it's tricky. But, yeah, it does sound like that's the case - that the divorce happened around, like, season 3 or 4 of Newsradio, in the middle of the specific five year period when he was actually making a lot of money. Beyond that is where I think it gets a little foggier.

Yeah I also don't believe every single one of them would sign on just because Dave need money.

I think they figured out a while ago that they work well as a comedy troupe even if they don't want to be doing stuff together all the time. Stuff with them together seems to pop up here and there.

I'm kind of sad at least one of them has proven to be a shitty ex-husband and dad. I never watched Kids in the Hall way back, but they were apparently a popular queer cultural touchstone and that always made me think nicely about them.

Assuming you're referring to Dave... I mean, I'm not exactly saying that's not true, just that I'm leery about coming to conclusions either way.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Dave wasn't at all.

Here's the short of his side. His wife was very much in the wrong on this. However, she had a very good lawyer who argued that she needed a very generous alimony to maintain lifestyle on top of the child support. The alimony and child support went into the millions (literally). He even argued to the judge that he couldn't possibly pay this. However, the payments were calculated based on a formula and based on what he was making when he was gainfully employed. As another person pointed out, he was at the peak of his career. But even then, there'd be no way that he could possibly pay that amount. His wife had the kids he'd take care of when she was traveling with another.

Still, he tried to pay what he could. After he lost his steady work, the alimony was even more exorbitant, but he was locked in. He literally couldn't make the payments, causing him to be arrested, and therefore making it even harder for him to make the payments.

So, he went to America. At least here, it'll be easier for him to make the payments. Dave Foley is the opposite of a deadbeat dad.

Ehhh. Like, that's definitely his story, but AFAIK we've only ever really heard his side of the thing so I'm not entirely sure I'd just take that 100% as fact.

Those kids were the very best! Love them.

I'm amazed they're even talking to each other. I mean, that breakup was - reportedly, anyway - pretty brutal.

(I kind of wonder if that's why Brain Candy is so awesome. That is one angry comedy, and I love it to death. And I wonder if some of that comes from half of them just hating each other at the time.)

Dude, what happened? (I really don't want to spend half the nigh googling the details.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Foley wasn't happy with the internal fighting or the script of Brain Candy, so he left the project and signed on with Newsradio, his most successful post Kids in the Hall gig. However, there was a concern that the remaining KitH wouldn't get paid for the script if he wasn't part of the project, so he agreed to put his name on it because he didn't think it would actually get made. He was in the film because he was contractually obligated to be in it, but he's not given a writer's credit.

I don't know anything the others haven't said already by the time I got around to checking notifications - but basically all of this? And on the Brain Candy set, people would like walk away and not talk to each other as soon as lines were delivered and stuff. Or so I heard, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Got any deets on that breakup? This is the first I'm hearing about it being messy.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of it was more by what wasn't said; i.e., none of the Kids would do interviews with each other, or even mention each other (versus praising their costars in other things), and I thiiiink (not sure on this) one or more of them had some kind of addiction to something going on? Plus, volatile personalities, etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Foley was sure as shit getting drunk a hell of a lot, if you listen to basically anyone from the Newsradio cast.

(Not in a bad way, necessarily; just that half the stories they tell are about getting rip-roaringly drunk together constantly)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
IKR? This is the first I'm hearing all the deets too.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I (a different anon) want to add that Kevin was severely depressed and also going through a divorce during the making of Brain Candy.

Brain Candy was a dark time for all of them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of feel like part of that was just always their relationship. I mean, reading between the lines, you get the sense that there was always a lot of tension, both artistic and personal, between them. Just the kind of friendship where you also kind of hate the person.

(Except Kevin. Everyone always talks about how much they all love Kevin)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
DA I got this sense too, like they have a chemistry when they work together but they are also the types to really get on each others nerves especially when they are tired and overworked.

I think they do care about each other though and by this point they've acknowledged that they're always going to be in each others lives in some way.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you're talking about the break up long ago, they have done tonnnnssss of shit together since then. They've done several tours and the short series Death comes to Town as well as a few other random things.

I think they just figured out they are the types who need a break from one another after working together for too long. I know they have fought in the past but something must keep bringing them all back, even outside of money.

Really? Oh good. Yeah, I'm talking about the one way back when. I saw that happen and thought "well, so much for that, I guess" and moved on. And I didn't know many other Kids fans? So nobody told me when they patched it over. Yay!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT I don't really keep up with the behind the scenes stuff so no one really told me either but I do know a few (not hardcore) kids fans so sometimes I find out when they are doing tours and other things.

Plus they're all a lot older now so things may have calmed considerably.
