Well I used to have a lot of conversations arguing against people who judged people who wrote OCs but I've finally just decided I don't give a fuck anymore.

I have gotten in a lot of discussions and arguments defending Ginny Weasley from the accusation of being a Mary Sue (at least book Ginny. I fully admit that movie Ginny was poorly written enough to come across that way.) I used to do the same with Danielle the girl in some of my avatars but I think fandom has warmed up to her now.

Really most "canon Sue" accusations annoy me a lot because some of the reasons are just so stupid and some people preach them as if they're unarguable fact. IMO it's much harder for a character in their original world to be a Mary Sue.

I tend to defend characters who get bashed sometimes more cause character bashing annoys me a lot. I've gotten in a few discussion about Danny/Sam versus Danny/Valerie. I have a sort of weird stance on Sam, I like her as a character but I hate what the later season did to her, so I will both defend her from getting straight up bashed AND criticize some of the things she's done that irk me a bit but were never addressed.

I think the definition of "Mary Sue" has been diluted and bastardized so much as to render it virtually useless (which is also a repetitive conversation in and of itself!).

These days it's shorthand for bashing any character who seems too perfect, which isn't its original useage at all. I'd argue that it's impossible by definition for a canon character to be a Sue. They can be badly written and poorly/shallowly developed and it's fine to call out those things, but they're not a Sue.

Very true. A majority of people I've met in writing circles tend to dislike it, for that reason but also because it really complicates things when reviewing/critiquing people. It either brings up a lot of confusion for someone who's unfamiliar with the term, and introduced to it for the first time, or raises defensiveness in the author and makes it that much harder to get through to them. Better to describe what the problems with the character are in detail.


That would make sense to me, really.
