Repetitive Conversations

(Anonymous) 2015-04-09 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
In fandom, what things do you find yourself saying over and over again (i.e. Tauriel's a Mary Sue; Thor and pop tarts, grr!).

What debates/conversations do you like to have over and over?
What are you tired of talking about?
What arguments/conversations do you have to involve yourself in no matter what?
What debate/conversation have you never seen but either wish was talked about or think is odd that it isn't?

I'm sick of the Regina anti!stans from OUAT. I'm just oh so very tired of them.

It doesn't even matter about my own personal opinion anymore. I read the letters 'GG' in a vidya gaem conversation, I make this horrible UGhgggggHGhhhhHGHGHGHGHGHHHGgGGGggHHHHHchhhk noise.

Years ago, there was a sort of fan idea that Wonder Woman needed to be sort of...supremely tall. Like, taller than Superman and Batman. For symbolic reasons, apparently.

And I thought this was silly. She's often drawn about six feet tall, give or take, yeah, but she's not the "big guy" like She-Hulk. But it was this ongoing thing.

It popped up again lately. I am mostly biting my tongue.

I think she ought to be on par with those guys. And not believe in bombing Palestinian children. Bigger than Supes is Big Barda's job though?

She doesn't need to be stupidly taller than those two, Big Barda's got that covered anyway, but I like it when she's at least their height.

I got really tired of arguing that Maggie was nineteen in the image, so you can't call the creator a pedophile over it. Also explaining that the comic is rated M for mature, so thirteen year olds aren't even supposed to be reading it anyway.

I'm tired about 'fans' taking headcanons too far, to the point where they are calling out and berating writers and actors for not adhering to them.

I will defend Thranduil any chance I get. There's quite a bit of Tolkien that I'm happy to talk about over and over again (a few things I'm sick of though).

I don't know how many times I've explained why I don't see The Hunger Games as a rip-off of Battle Royale and why I really like both of them. Thankfully it doesn't come up much anymore.

Well I used to have a lot of conversations arguing against people who judged people who wrote OCs but I've finally just decided I don't give a fuck anymore.

I have gotten in a lot of discussions and arguments defending Ginny Weasley from the accusation of being a Mary Sue (at least book Ginny. I fully admit that movie Ginny was poorly written enough to come across that way.) I used to do the same with Danielle the girl in some of my avatars but I think fandom has warmed up to her now.

Really most "canon Sue" accusations annoy me a lot because some of the reasons are just so stupid and some people preach them as if they're unarguable fact. IMO it's much harder for a character in their original world to be a Mary Sue.

I tend to defend characters who get bashed sometimes more cause character bashing annoys me a lot. I've gotten in a few discussion about Danny/Sam versus Danny/Valerie. I have a sort of weird stance on Sam, I like her as a character but I hate what the later season did to her, so I will both defend her from getting straight up bashed AND criticize some of the things she's done that irk me a bit but were never addressed.

Star Wars prequels

After all these years, I still think they're excellent films and I will defend my point of view. Needless to say, it gets challenged A LOT.

I love conversations about writing and the writing process, and the story elements in media that worked or failed and why. Just the nitty-gritty of writing choices.

I don't think it's talked about enough, but when it is, I'm all over that no matter how many times people rehash the same old stuff.

Re: Repetitive Conversations

Conversations about gender and Wheel of Time. Partly because I usually end up making the same points time after time. Partly because a lot of people... I'm trying to be fair here. I think it's a very settled thing in a lot of peoples' minds, and so mostly people don't even go into depth. They just make a lot of quick jokes about braid-tugging and then say that the female characters are awful and that's it. So it's not just that it's a position I disagree with, it's also that it's presented as a fait accompli. And while I understand why they think that way, it's just frustrating for me.

Maybe not on here, but I've been making fun of the juxtapose words "gaming" and "journalism" for years. Usually I just say, "'gaming journalism'" and leave it at that. I mean, seriously, I can't even say think about that without snickering myself to death.

Explanations of why something lots of people like is problematic. Do people who write these think the fans have never heard it before and are going to change their minds? I know my fave is problematic. I don't care. Sometimes that's even why I like it!

Re: Repetitive Conversations

(Anonymous) 2015-04-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I really hate the "haters/not haters" arguments because I don't think we need to have a divide in fandom between people who want to squee and people who don't. Especially because those roles can change depending on how you liked an episode or even a season of a show.

I don't think haters need to GTFO of fandom either, I enjoy critiquing media and I also enjoy reading other people's thoughts on it. It's also nice to have "haters" sometimes because if I really hated an episode it makes me feel not so alone about it.

I mean yes, all out bashing can suck and if someone is in fandom JUST to bash it and doesn't care about the media anymore then they probably should leave. But I think calling people who want to critique as a whole haters is silly, and if you really don't want to deal with it then you don't have to talk to them or read their blog.

Generally I feel this boils down to people taking fiction too personally.

I was never a hardcore Swanfire shipper, or a hardcore Gremma shipper. But Hook/Captain Swan fans who hate on Neal or think Graham and Hook would've been friends make me want to punch something. Neal and Graham were both better people than Hook will ever even come close to being. Emma, even with her innate sense of justice watered-down so she can turn a blind eye to Hook's being an asshole, deserves better. Anyone who says Hook's "redemption" is believable is basically guaranteed an argument.

More broadly, anyone arguing that OUAT was well-written after season 1 will at least get an eye-roll. Hell, even season 1 could've stood a lot of improvement, but from season 2 on it was painfully obvious the writers hadn't planned beyond breaking the curse, except that Rumpelstiltskin would find Bae and that Bae was Henry's father.

I'm tired of trying to explain that just because I'm a fan of Character X doesn't mean I automatically ship him in the big popular pairing with Character Y, or that I must hate Character Z or people who ship Y/Z.

Tired of every otherwise interesting meta discussion devolving into a treatise on why that popular pairing is, or should be, canon.

Also tired of fending off accusations of misogyny because I dislike ONE female character in a show that's been on for almost a decade, but like some male characters who have some things in common with her (but are not, in fact, exactly the same apart from gender.)

I'm tired of hearing how people hate Character X for the bad things he did to Character Z, long after X has repented his actions, suffered horribly for them and done everything in his power to atone and make amends, and Z has long since forgiven him.

Tired of hearing what a rotten person Character A was because he was thrust into a horrible, unfamiliar, dangerous and traumatic situation and failed to live up to modern enlightened standards of behavior, under circumstances which would have made that flat-out impossible for ANYONE to do.

Tired of hearing show creators accused of being bad people because they're not caving to the demands of a very vocal subset of fans.

Frankly, there are times when I wish about 90% of my fandom would shut the hell up and just reblog the pretty pictures already.
