I guess that's the downside to works of fiction that try to be socially progressive. They'll attract these... types... of fans.

But seriously, the SU fandom really seems to need some windmill monster to fight, so that they can feel morally superior. A couple of weeks ago it was these supposed "gemtlemen" who were allegedly Bronies trying to invade and ruin the SU fandom. From what I gathered, they probably didn't even exist. Then it was people who supposedly used to disliked Greg before we got the preview to that flashback where it turns out he used to be more conventionally attractive when he was young. Right now the SU fandom is vilifying skinny people who want to cosplay Rose. Or fanartists who don't draw Rose as fat as she was when pregnant.

If I didn't enjoy watching the actual show so much, I swear...

Are you denying that a show aimed at a diverse age-group fanbase got overrun by men in their 20s and 30s who essentially appropriated the entire fandom for themselves and proceeded to display all the standard douchebro neckbeard behavior patterns, including pornifying the hell out of it, and doing what shitty computer literate douchebros do when they want to run someone off the Internet (which is harass, stalk and dox them)?

Gosh I can't think of why some of the SU fans might be just a bit leery of the same thing and yeah, they're probably overreacting being pre-emptive about it, but it's not like these phenomena occur in a vacuum.

I'm not denying Bronies with questionable behaviour exist (although I'm not that familiar with the MLP fandom, I've only sorta casually watched that series and I don't live in the USA so dunno what it's like there, so it's hard to comment on the exact details), I was commenting on the fact that the supposed phenomenom of them invading the SU fandom to do the same there seems to have been largely fabricated by the less rational segments of the SU fandom itself.

The term "gemtlemen" for example was popularized by the SU fandom defending itself against them. Apparently some person who's in the pony fandom was considering making a SU fansite, the pony fandom as a whole proceeded to be disinterested in SU, some SU fan dug up a screencap some old Youtube comments where someone had considered the title "gemtlemen" to describe the SU fandom (and then abandoned the idea a few comments later due to it sounding ridiculous and unneccessarily gendered, but that wasn't included in the screencap).

A moral panic ensued with the SU fandom flipping their collective shit about all these supposed bronies calling themselves "gemtlemen" and trying to take over the SU fandom.

It was kind of an overreaction, and as an isolated incident it might've just fallen under this whole "misinformation spreads a lot on Tumblr" thing, but. They seem to need to have a similiar reaction against something new at least once a week. This definitely isn't going to make the fandom safe for kids, because of all these rules and regulations and the tendency to attack everyone who steps onto something unexpectedly explosive on the fandom minefield.

http://i.imgur.com/GBfasX2.png This was one of SU's fans reaction on Tumblr too, as well someone posted to treat "bronies as garbage so they would leave SU alone".

Rereading my original comment and your response, I'm actually a tad confused about your interpretation. I'm assuming you read the "From what I gathered, they probably didn't even exist" part and took it to mean that I claimed Bronies do not exist... which is obviously untrue. What I was trying to get across was that there does not actually seem to have been a statistically significant group of Bronies who suddenly took interest in SU and tried to take over the fandom.

If they do exist and I somehow managed to miss them while following the whole thing go down, source links would be useful.

Thank you for providing the link.

It does look more like a counter-reaction to the SU fandom's initial "stay away gemtlemen!" reaction than the other way 'round, though. Kind of like punching a hornet's nest because one thinks the hornets might have wanted to attack, is probably gonna make them attack for real.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
That did not, in fact, happen. Grow up.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Because only dudes pornify the hell out of anything, right. People can porn what they want ok, leave them alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
+1. I porn the heck out of Disney movies, and I've seen a lot of women porn similar media. It's great, and it's not hurting anyone. I don't see why men should be barred from doing the same.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
This.

As long as you tag it correctly so those who don't want to see don't have to, I do no see the issue.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there is a problem when fanartists draw Rose Quartz really thin. I've seen it several times and it drives me crazy. "Generally slightly chubby" doesn't count, either. Learn to draw larger people, ffs.

But otherwise, cosplay policing is pretty shitty, yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, although it seems some cases of too-thin Rose fan art are just inexperienced artists who haven't drawn fat people much before. I don't think screaming at inexperienced artists for not already being good at something they only just started doing is gonna be very helpful.

Maybe I'm taking the policing of Rose's appearance thing a bit personally though, since I'm a fat woman with a similar body type to Rose when she's not pregnant, and it's making me a bit uncomfortable when drawing her like that is dancing on the edge of the risk of being called fatphobic, even though that's what she looks like in the freaking source material.

"Yeah, although it seems some cases of too-thin Rose fan art are just inexperienced artists who haven't drawn fat people much before. I don't think screaming at inexperienced artists for not already being good at something they only just started doing is gonna be very helpful."

This is (sadly) very true. If an inexperienced artist isn't used to handling concrit/critique just yet, a really vitriolic, "punch down" response is, more often than not, likely to convince them to not even bother trying to draw X thing again any time soon, if ever*.

Granted, there is a considerable difference between "I think this picture of Rose Quartz is very lovely, though the only thing that I feel could use improvement/change is her body size/shape, so it's closer to the show. I suggest looking at references on the SU wiki" and "[insert typical SJW strawman verbal attack laced with fatphobic accusations here]". It's all in how you approach the situation, imo. Something something more bees/flies with honey than vinegar.

*(And if the artist completely shuts down any polite concrit/gets super defensive about their choices in an indignant matter, then learn to pick battles and just leave them alone in their echo chamber)

Yeesh, this.

Although even better might be to point them towards live/photo reference. I used to be an inexperienced artist as a kid, and at some point I imitated the style of some comics I read back then, and that led to having to unlearn a bunch of stuff later. And I had it less bad than many of my peers learning to draw (at least I was bright enough to avoid those ugly "how to draw manga" guides). Imitating pre-existing styles gets "safer" once you have some experience on your own, but using that as a primary basis in early stages of learning can easily lead to lacking originality while copying someone else's mistakes. Plus the copy-of-a-copy detail loss effect.

Kind of a pity that lots of live/photo gesture drawing references found online tend to mainly feature thin young women with "classically beautiful" proportions, and probably posed in weirdly sexualised and utterly impractical ways...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-13 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's weird when people draw Rose skinny, because it doesn't reflect what she looks like in the show, but as a fatty myself I don't think it's offensive or "fatphobic" or anything, unless it's accompanied by some comment about how they made her skinny because fat people are gross or something.

It'd suck if they started drawing her skinny in the show but fans can and should be able to do whatever the fuck they want as long as they're not being arseholes about it.
